Numbers aren't adding up

I compiled the data on the three pages listing current Hall of Fame enshrinees to pull together some summary numbers that are currently listed under "By the numbers," but that data conflicts with the press release from the NFF announcing this year's class:

Only 796 players and 170 coaches have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame from the more than 4.4 million who have played the game over the past 138 years.

Add this to the 13 players and 2 coaches inducted in 2006, and you get different numbers than what's currently listed (809 players and 174 coaches). Where did we get the data currently on these articles from, and is there any way to verify it for completeness without going through the Hall of Fame's search page?

  • I just checked the search page, which lists a total of 973 results - which further confuses things because that number doesn't jive with the 981 referred to in the press release or our list of 983. -- PSUMark2006 talk | contribs 06:40, 15 December 2006 (UTC) reply
    • There are 174 coaches listed on the coach page, so it's in the players. We could provide a link in the list to the CHOF website to each bio. Then, when someone doesn't have a bio we'll known which ones. I realize it's a lot of work, but both we'll be more accurate & the list will provide more information. -- MECU talk 13:36, 15 December 2006 (UTC) reply
      • That's a good idea. We should also add links to the individual WP player/coach pages as well - what would be the best way to standardize that? Add it as an option for the players'/coaches' infoboxes? -- PSUMark2006 talk | contribs 17:08, 15 December 2006 (UTC) reply
        • The {{ Infobox gridiron football person}} (which most player article use probably, I don't know of a college player infobox) already has fields for the CHOF (and pro HOF) with links to the HOF. (I actually put that in on the NFL box). But the {{ Infobox college coach}} does not. It has a HOF field, but it's just for the year they were inducted and not to link it to the HOF bio. I think it should be reasonable to add this as a link next to that data, or change it so it doesn't link to the Wikipedia CHOF page but to the bio. I'll start a conversation there about this. In the meanwhile, we certainly can begin adding the bio link. Do we want to add another column to the tables, or just link the year perhaps? I'm up for either way. -- MECU talk 18:54, 15 December 2006 (UTC) reply
          • I think that linking to the year might make the most sense if only because if we add a new column, every single row will say the exact same thing - having consistent link text in each of the infoboxes makes sense but if it's in a table it'll just look redundant and cluttered at first glance. -- PSUMark2006 talk | contribs 19:13, 15 December 2006 (UTC) reply
            • I found one. John McKay was listed under the players, but he was inducted as a coach. This is probably where our errors are. So you can't just see if they exist, but you have look at what position they were inducted as. -- MECU talk 16:19, 18 December 2006 (UTC) reply
              • I think the listed should be merged into one. We can have separate sections for players and coaches, but I dont see why this list is split into three articles.-- NMajdantalk 16:20, 18 December 2006 (UTC) reply
                • My guess would be for size and to help keep it manageable. At least, coach and players should be separated to help manage it. -- MECU talk 16:40, 18 December 2006 (UTC) reply

I have added the field CollegeHOFID to Template:College coach infobox ( talk links ). In that field should be the ID from the CFB HOF website. I've added the field to a couple articles already including Barry Switzer, Woody Hayes, Knute Rockne, Hayden Fry and some others. I wanted to keep the wikilink to the College Football Hall of Fame article and preferably the year in sports article so right now the link to the CFB HOF website is a space ( ) with the external link arrow. Let me know if you feel this should be changed. I've also noticed that Bobby Bowden is listed as a 2006 inductee but he is not on the HOF website and Joe Paterno is down as a 2007 inductee. I left those alone but we may consider removing those until they are reflected on the HOF website.-- NMajdantalk 15:02, 18 December 2006 (UTC) reply

I've gone to the CFHoF database and checked the numbers. The totals for Penn State and Notre Dame included the coaches. There were a few other adjustments, no more than one either way, except for Northwestern. Excluding the two from Northwestern State, that leaves 11 if you count the 2008 inductee. I left NW off the table because I can't tell if there is another school with 11 or 12 members. Clarityfiend ( talk) 04:58, 24 April 2009 (UTC) reply

The last paragraph under 'Building' is clearly someone's opinion, most likely a disgruntled Indiana taxpayer. It's certainly not NPOV even if true and should be removed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Countryroads ( talkcontribs) 18:46, 19 December 2012 (UTC) reply

Players by school table, broken links in tables

The "Players by school" table wasn't adding up; so with the 2014 inductions announced, I did a search for each school listed in the table for "All Players" (excluding coaches) on this page. That changed the numbers for a lot of schools; it looks like there was a mix of old numbers in the table, along with some searches that must have been done for "all inductees" rather than players only. This resulted in dropping UCLA from the table because there appear to be only 11 player inductees from UCLA, not 15, and it seems possible that another school might actually have more than 11. Since there was a dropoff from 15 to 11, it seemed safer to reduce the number of schools in the table. No offense to UCLA fans! If someone wants to do a more detailed search to see who really should actually be next on the list, or can fill the table in further--or better yet, can find a list of inductees by school--that would be ideal.

There are a couple other issues with the various CFHOF pages; the A-K list links to each player's school article, while the L-Z list lists the school's football team article. The latter seems preferable, but it's a big project to fix the other page.

Another even bigger project is that all of the links to the individual player page (from the "year inducted" column) on the CFHOF site are broken since that website changed its structure at some point. As a result, all the links need to be updated to the new structure. It would be a good project to take on in chunks if someone has the bandwidth! -- Esprqii ( talk) 17:23, 23 May 2014 (UTC) reply

Update to remove promotional content

I work in the marketing department with the College Football Hall of Fame, and am reaching out to see if I can work with a Wikipedia editor to make the College Football Hall of Fame's page meet Wikipedia's neutral point of view. I understand that content on the page reads more promotional in nature, and while I have a few ideas on how to remove that content, we are open to recommendations. Some ideas include: Discuss the induction process including the enshrinement ("Blade") ceremony at the Hall of Fame in December. Add [ MacArther Bowl] Ceremony moved to the new Hall in Atlanta. Given that each specific gallery listed can not be sourced by credible media source, consider removing them so that the page doesn't read like a brochure for the museum. Consider instead of highlighting all galleries, utilize past news articles to discuss the technology. Ex: USA Today, SB Nation and CNN. The Hall of Fame has also recently hired a new CEO with past experience at TBS and Coca-Cola. Again, we are open to recommendations, and respect Wikipedia and it's guidelines and want to make sure that we are meeting Wikipedia's standards. I removed the entire tour section. It read too much like a brochure. I may be wrong, but I don't think the majority of people coming to this page are interested in the actual building itself, but the hall as an entity. Thus it should contain more background on the entity's history and the individuals who helped bring it together. Lizard ( talk) 03:00, 31 July 2016 (UTC) reply

What did Dennis Dodd say?

"The eligibility criteria have changed over time, and have occasionally led to criticism. Dennis Dodd of CBSSports.com has said,"

And that's it? What did he say? Should we just delete this bit for now? Talydensic ( talk) 21:15, 24 February 2022 (UTC) reply
