Grace Meng

Grace Meng is of Taiwanese decent, not Chinese. That should be noted or her reference removed 36.229.196.77 ( talk) 00:10, 19 June 2017 (UTC) reply

Castncoot, you have added 44 non-article names to the list in this article [1], [2]. Standard procedure on Wikipedia is to include in lists only items that have their own Wikipedia article. It doesn't matter whether the item is cited or not, or where the item is cited from. We still only include Wikipedia-articled items in lists. (Also, Wikipedia notability guidelines are for whether an article should be deleted or not.) One person's judgment (yours) as to whether an item is notable does not equate to whether the item should be included on a list, even if it is cited. That's why the standard for list-inclusion is having a Wikipedia article on the subject, because one person's judgment, no matter the citation, is fallible and insufficient. Please read WP:COATRACK, and if you feel any of these non-article people merit inclusion on this list, then write the article first. -- Softlavender ( talk) 06:36, 2 October 2018 (UTC) reply

Softlavender, your understanding of this issue is not correct. The standard is that those listed with refs who could warrant their own page qualify to remain in the notable people section, rather than people who already have Wikipages created. But your thinking defies logic, because you're implying that until a Wikipage is created, one is not notable - but a Wikipage cannot be created in the first place unless one is notable. You're also misunderstanding write the article first. That guidleline instructs one not to red-link, with no bearing on quoting people with adequate references in the notable people's section. And by the way, it's not just I – other editors have done the same on this and other articles. One cannot confuse notability with already having a Wikipedia article; rather, it is notability that would warrant a Wikipedia article which counts. Taiwanese cited as Chinese

I've stumbled upon this article by sheer chance, and I've noticed that quite a few Taiwanese and Taiwanese-Americans have been wrongly cited as being Chinese. I know that there's been a few disputes about Taiwan and China in the recent past (see Edit warring in Taiwan if you're interested), but their (and their parents') place of origin is Taiwan, and should thus be reflected in their removal from this list, as they are not Chinese. Also, can someone go over the list in full and remove any remaining wrongly cited people? I've only had a cursory glance at the list, and removed a few people. I'm sure there are more, and I sure can't do this on my own. Thanks, Tzepeng ( talk) 00:01, 15 May 2020 (UTC) reply

Also, articles such as this exist, so why shouldn't one for New Yorkers exist? Tzepeng ( talk) 21:00, 21 May 2020 (UTC) reply

I think creating a Taiwanese people in New York City article would be a fantastic idea! Unfortunately, I don't have topic experience for that and would love it if someone would create and expand such an article! However, that doesn't change the fact that this article is meant to describe New Yorkers of Chinese ethnicity, whether their nationality happens to be mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Vietnam, or even South/North Korea—and of course, the United States itself. Confusing Sentences

I noticed the following sentence in the large-scale immigration section of this article:

"Quantification of the magnitude of this modality of emigration is imprecise and varies over time, but it appears to continue unabated on a significant basis."

The sentence's internal logic and intention is somewhat apparent, but the writing is very weak and almost nonsensical. I plan to make changes. 73.213.120.14 ( talk) 07:03, 22 June 2023 (UTC) reply
