Lacrosse history

Suggested updates/amends

In line with Wikipedia's Conflict of Interest Policy, as the PR Officer at Cheadle Hulme School I would like to suggest to amendments and updates to this page:

INFOBOX The infobox states that the 'Second Master' is 'Laurence Carr'. The School now has a Senior Deputy Head, rather than a Second Master, whose name is John Winter [1].

HISTORY Just a couple of typos here, which I would be happy to edit: End of second line of first paragraph in the brackets; (One of whom was "Ezekiel Browne) - should read (one of whom was Ezekiel Browne)

At the end of this section it would be good to add a link to Lucy Pearson's own Wikipedia page, which already exists - Lucy Pearson (cricketer).

JUNIOR SCHOOL At the end of this section, the Head's full name could be placed - Mrs Barbara Bottoms [2].

MUSIC Mrs. Joanna Davies and Dr. Harry Lowe no longer work at the school. The Music Department is now currently headed up by Mr Philip Dewhurst (Director of Music) and Mrs Sally Cocksedge (Assistant Director of Music) [3].

MODEL UNITED NATIONS The School's MUN team, MUNCH has its own website which could be linked to half way through the section - http://www.mun-ch.co.uk/

FUTURE The School now does deliver Pre-U courses alongside A Levels [4].

A good addition to this section might be to talk about the School's Ten Year Strategic Plan, which was put in place by Lucy Pearson. See http://www.cheadlehulmeschool.co.uk/ten_year_strategic_plan for a whole host of information about this and the vision which the School has for its future.

I also may have some more up to date photography for the page but I need to investigate the copyright issues with this first.

Requested edit

I would like to update a couple of images on this page and also and a small piece of information to a couple of sections. As the PR Officer at the School and in line with Wikipedia's Conflict of Interest Policy, I would be grateful if somebody could implement these changes for me.

MAIN IMAGE The image currently showing at the top of the page is very old and outdated. The signage is now very different to that which is shown and I also don't believe it is the best encyclopaedic image to show for the School. Instead, I propose that the School's crest File:Cheadle Hulme School Crest.jpg be used as the main image. I have uploaded it, ready for use.

POLITICS The image used to represent Think Tank, on the right of the page, is also very old. A more recent visitor to the Think Tank society was Nick Robinson (a former student at the School). ( https://www.cheadlehulmeschool.co.uk/podium/default.aspx?t=204&nid=658703) I have uploaded an image of his visit to the School File:Nick Robinson visits Cheadle Hulme School.jpg which would make this section more up to date and also link in with the 'Notable Former Students' section below. It would be great if this could be done also.

  • It appears as though the crest has already been added. When requests for edits are made, we need to review the specifics of the request, i.e., we need you to describe the change in detail, supported by reliable and independent sources for the edits you are suggesting. Be as specific as possible, ideally following a "replace X with Y" model, specifying the precise text and citations you are proposing. Before we would approve adding the image for Nick Robinson, we would need to have prose that supports adding the image. The current image that you wish to replace supports the article, while the replacement has no corresponding content. As far as the other requested edit, I'm concerned with the content in this article being primarily sourced to the school. We actually require reliable sources that are independent of the subject. Response re: requested edits above

In the section regarding Politics, one of the recent visitors to the school's Think Tank society was former student Nick Robinson [5]. This is why I believe it would be great to update the page with the image of Nick mentioned above. It is a much more recent visit than the John Whittaker one mentioned currently in the article.

Could we add Nick to the sentence regarding visitors to Think Tank and replace the John Whittaker photo with the Nick Robinson photo I uploaded?

Regarding my note re Music and Sports Scholarships. If you would prefer secondary sources, this is also cited here [6]

Replacing/removing main image from right bar

I would like to remove or replace the main image of the school gates from the right hand side of the article.

It is a very old image which doesn't represent what the School looks like today.

I have more recent images and am willing to upload them etc. but do you also need other sources/evidence to prove they are more up to date? Or, if I upload, would somebody be able to replace it for me?-- Timhudsonchs ( talk) 14:34, 12 March 2014 (UTC) reply

Hi Tim; whilst an independent source would be ideal, I can't see this change being controversial, and an up-to-date image will inevitably add more to the article than an outdated image. Updated main photo for article

As mentioned in my post above this one, the main photograph on the Cheadle Hulme School page is very out of date and I don't believe is a good record of what the School actually looks like.

I have uploaded another image HERE which is more up to date and is a better record of what the School looks like.

It would be great if someone were able to change this.

COI Edit Request - cheadlehulmeschool.co.uk web links updates

We recently updated the School's website, not only in design but also to a whole new content management system. This means that existing links to the old website now no longer work. As such, some of the links and sources referenced on this page are broken links.

I am able to amend these to link to the correct part of the School's website, or alternatively can work to find secondary sources for some of the information if that is preferred (I understand this has been flagged as an issue at the top of the page).

Alternatively, if it is preferred that I don't personally make the edits, I can go through the links and post the correct links here on the talk page.

Accuracy of Crest Image

The crest/coat of arms now in place on this article is not an accurate representation of the School's crest/logo. As has been discussed on the uploader's Talk Page it would be better if the School's logo were uploaded, as previously in place on that page. Currently the image shown is unencyclopaedic due to its inaccuracy. The correct image to use would be the full logo which includes the crest and the words Cheadle Hulme School underneath, as per the School's Brand Guidelines. Originally, RaphaelQS uploaded just the crest/coat of arms, which was a cropped version of the logo but this violated copyright. I suggest, to maintain accuracy and correctness, the original logo file is inserted in to the article. This means users will be able to see the accurate coat of arms. I think my traced version of the coat of arms is accurate by the standards of the project, but some feedbacks are welcome about this. And by the way Timhudsonchs you are not talking about the crest, but the whole coat of arms. The crest is a little part of the coat of arms:

  • @ RaphaelQS: Your tracing of the logo/crest/coat constitutes a copyright violation, as it is a derivative work of a copyrighted element. It would be far better to upload a small version of the logo (found at [1]) to here, (not to Commons) and give it a fair-use rationale on the upload page. This is done at WP:UPLOAD.   • (edit conflict)In this case, the original logo may not be under copyright anymore due to its age anyway. @ Timhudsonchs: can you confirm when the current logo and coat was first published? @ RaphaelQS: you say it is "established practice" to use derivative drawings of logos. Where was this practice so established? In this case particularly, the person most knowledgeable on the logo's correct use is stating that your rendition is incomplete. Again, as far as I know, a coat of arms is not copyrightable under US law, on the other hand a specific rendition can be. I may be wrong on this matter, but then all coats of arms on Wikipedia should have their first rendition copyright expired. -- RaphaelQS ( talk) 16:42, 15 June 2016 (UTC) reply
  • Well, like everything, "it depends". A coat of arms, when you get down to it, is just a drawing. So if that drawing contains uncreative text, shapes, etc, then it is not copyrightable. Non-geometric shapes, such as the boat in this particular one, constitute creativity, so would be subject to copyright law. Now that all said, if this or any logo pre-dates 1925, then its copyright has lapsed, so anyone is free to reproduce it. Hence my question to Timhudsonchs above. That's why most of the logos you mention are actually OK to use, due to age. The question that raises is: if the logo is Public Domain, then why not just upload it as it appears on the school's site? I think there is only three likely conclusions to our little issue:
1. The coat of arms existed prior to 1925 and so it's ok to use my rendition;
2. The coat of arms did not existed prior to 1925 and it's ok to use my rendition because coats of arms are not copyrightable;
3. The coat of arms did not existed prior to 1925 and we can't use my rendition because coats of arms are copyrightable.
By the way the boat is not extracted from the logo, it is from the public domain like all other elements in my rendition of the coat of arms. -- RaphaelQS ( talk) 16:59, 15 June 2016 (UTC) reply
  • I don't think #2 is correct in this case. Some COA's can be copyrighted if they are more than just simple geometric shapes, per Wikipedia:Copyright on emblems and Commons:Derivative works. For #3: In that case, we can still use the actual logo under a claim of fair use, which seems like the easy resolution to this problem. Crow Caw 17:10, 15 June 2016 (UTC) reply
The crest/COA in its current form was created in 2010. Whilst earlier versions of the crest did exist, its current and most up to date form it was established in 2010 (there were some alterations to the crest/COA at this point to make it what it is now). As well as the issues you both raise about copyright, my main issue is accuracy. The COA currently on the article is NOT the School's COA, it is an impression of it. To retain accuracy to the article, I would suggest that the original, now orphaned file, is reinserted into the article. This also means there are no copyright issues over misuse and alteration of the School's logo. Timhudsonchs ( talk) 18:31, 15 June 2016 (UTC) reply
So we need to determine if the actual consensus in the project about putting coats of arms and not logos in the "image" field of the infobox in school articles is more important than accurate representation of the official rendition as used by the school today. For now my opinion is that we need more information before breaking the consensus. For example, was another rendition of the coat of arms used by the school in the past? Or by a book about English school?   • Why would there be one different rule here than for other businesses (since, as a private school we are also a business)? Is Wikipedia going to start allowing artists' impressions of the Nike logo, for example? I don't understand why this copyright rule is different just because we are a school.

@ RaphaelQS: After reading your last, I think we are saying the same thing, but in different words! (I think that) you're saying that the concept behind the COA, "lion rampant d'or surmounting blah blah blah" can't be copyrighted, but when someone takes that and draws it, the specific drawing can be. Which is exactly correct. So this now raises a weird area that I think does need wider input: to what extent closely drawn images are copyrightable if the concept used to draw them is not... Also to Timhudsonchs if what I just wrote is true, then it would be that the version on your site is copyrighted, while Raphael's is freely licensed (by virtue of it being uploaded here). @ Crow: Surely non-free content can be used with the express permission of the owner? Like the Nike logo is used on their page, for example? From my point of view, I am representing a business who wish for their correct logo to be used in the place that other businesses use their on Wikipedia. This is to a) ensure accuracy, b) remove any ambiguity about the School's logo and c) ensure that the correct image appears in any online searches, for example. @ RaphaelQS: - I will open a discussion on the School's project page but since not all schools, particularly independent schools, even have coats of arms anyway, I struggle to understand how your 'rule' can be catch-all for the project.
  • The consensus about putting coats of arms in the "image" field of infobox in school article is about English school as far as I know. Many schools in England don't have a coat of arms, but most of them have. If they don't have a coat of arms then the consensus doesn't concern their articles. -- RaphaelQS ( talk) 16:02, 20 June 2016 (UTC) reply
  • @ Timhudsonchs: The "problem", if you will, with non-free content is that we publish under This Free License which allows anyone anywhere to use, re-use, modify, parody, sell for a profit, or basically use all content for any purpose whatsoever. So we must ensure that all source material is free to use under those same terms. In the case where there is no free equivalent, and not having the image would be detrimental to the reader's understanding, we allow limited use of non-free content. If reproducing a crest/coat/insignia such as yours is indeed not a copyright violation, then our non-free content criteria pretty much requires us to use the free adaptation. To use the original when alternatives are available, the original would have to be released under that same free license, which allows all the use and re-use I mentioned above. If you and the school want to go that route, you can follow the steps at WP:DCM.
  • Otherwise, if you're not happy with the appearance of the logo, there are a couple of alternatives in the short term. One is to work with someone, like Raphael or another, to make the drawing more close to what you want. Alternately you can open a discussion about removing it altogether if you feel its appearance is insufficient to convey the intended understanding. I am curious to see how the discussions on COA/Crests goes too. Lastly to your point above, many company logos are used under Fair Use without necessarily needing permission, if they meet all of the non-free criteria. As it happens with the Nike logo, the swoosh is not copyrightable, being just a simple shape (though it is trademarked of course). Crow Caw 17:15, 20 June 2016 (UTC) reply

Proposed Update - Inspection Report

The school was Inspected in April 2017 and therefore the information on this page's introductory section is now out of date.

Please could I suggest that it is changed to the following:

The most recent inspection report rated "the quality of pupils’ academic and other achievements" and "the quality of the pupils’ personal development" as "excellent". The report found that Reception children demonstrate "exceptional achievement" and Junior School pupils achieve an "excellent standard across all their areas of learning". In the Senior School, pupils’ success in public examinations reflect the "high academic standards" of the School and that pupils "develop skills, knowledge and understanding to a high standard across a wide range of subjects."
