I appreciate the work I found here when I encountered the article. It seems fairly obvious that the Chattahoochee is the star of the show here. Mountains, waterfalls, THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL, Brasstown Bald, etc. But the Oconee is part of it, and I have strong emotional ties to the Oconee, so I rewrote the final paragraph relating to the Oconee RD. First, there is no national forest land in Madison, so there is no private inholdings in national forest land where there is no NF land. Second, those private landowners would not be consulting with PARK rangers, a national forest is not a national park. Park Ranger is not a job description within USDA Forest Service. Oops, got a little caustic there, sorry. The tiny Oconee, by the way, one year in the eighties, led all the National Forests in the US in volume of timber sales! Go back to the 1930s and the land that is now the verdant Oconee was a wasteland, gullied red clay incapable of growing ragweed. I repeat, I have strong emotional ties to the Oconee.
