blurb for DYK

Did You Know

...that the Caribbean Club in Key Largo, Florida was built by former millionaire promoter Carl Graham Fisher as "a poor man's retreat" and became famous as a filming site for the 1947 film Key Largo starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall?

Who actually described it as "a poor man's retreat." ? I'm loath to remove the phrase, as it got into DYK, but it is implied that it is a quote, although we are left to ponder who by and when. Could we have a source? 09:37, 11 January 2006 (UTC) (Skittle)

Also, I see my change of "considered a genius as a promoter" to "considered a skillful promoter" got reverted without any explanation. Now, I'm aware that there are some fans editing here, but the 'considered' is simply weasel words to allow the NPOV 'genius' through. If this doesn't get rewritten in a NPOV way (eg, "Blah Blah considered him "a genius promoter" (link)"), I will change this back tomorrow. 57.66.51.165 16:42, 8 February 2006 (UTC) (Skittle) reply

Eye witness (sort of) Well, I was living there when the Hollywood crew came to write the screen play. Evelyn, Keys, John Houston and others stayed in the rooms adjacent to the original club. According to my aunt, Miss Keyes often watched me when aunty was busy in the kitchen. It was never a two-story hotel as pictured in the movie. The character "Ziggie" was named for the manager of the club at the time -- Ziggie S. The sleeping rooms were in a wing, east of the main building, but burned down in the fifties. The owner’s house was a concrete home to the westerly side. There was an enclosed tennis court used as a kennel for the owner’s dogs, and occasional playpen for me and my brother. According to our family history, the Caribbean Club was home to the original and best Key Lime Pie recipe -- the condensed milk version. (Limes were available from an abandoned, over grown, Spanish-lime grove to the east -- up the card sound road). The Club was only one of at least two facilities operated by our family aimed at serving a better clientele, the second being a gambling club hidden in a "coral" castle, later owned by the Catholic Church.

If any footage was shot it was background shots of the bay, palms, and beaches. Nothing of the building, boathouse, docks or grounds were part of the movey -- all Hollywood.

Yup, lots of lore about the place but few left who remember how it really was. Few remember when the drive from homestead to Key Largo was a real adventure, with armies of land crabs crossing the highway threatening to cut you tires with their shells as you drove over them; and saltwater crocks frequently warming themselves on the pavement on some unusually cold winter day; And, you never wanted to run out of gas or break down as there was no place to get help between the Last Chance Bar and Grill and what is now Gilberts, but in the politically incorrect 40s and 50s it was called Jewfish Creek. The mosquitoes would drain you dry if you stayed outside for too long.

I know that General Eisenhower stopped by on his way to Key West, at least long enough to have picture taken with my aunt sitting on the boathouse dock and in the kitchen (I still have those photos).

Defining Carl Fisher

In the WP Featured Article Carl G. Fisher, you will find good references and quotations for the various descriptons of the interesting man used in this article. The reader of the Fisher article will note that he had a very successful career with many projects, and even after his finances were largely destroyed, he continued working in promotion. His shortcoming are also mentioned, so any favorably sounding POV aspects are balanced in the overall. Vaoverland 10:25, 11 January 2006 (UTC) reply
