Formal water trails seem to be a new phenomenon, at least as recognized at a level with the National Trails System. Everglades National Park has had some marked canoe trails for awhile, and Buck Island Reef National Monument has some underwater scuba/snorkel trails, but these are subfeatures of larger units. Trail of Tears National Historic Trail does partially follows the Tennessee River, though (some Cherokee took boats). Perhas other countries have nationally recognized water trails? For now I added Category:Water transportation in the United States -- a rather non-specific category -- but perhaps some time in the future a water trails category may be appropriate. — Eoghanacht ^talk 16:41, 18 January 2007 (UTC) reply

A bit of trivia... although only a few miles of the water trail are in Delaware, this makes it the only NPS site in the "First State." But there are two caveats: the NPS does not own the trail (just provides overall management guidance) and the trail is not listed as a "unit" of the National Park System. — Eoghanacht ^talk 19:29, 2 May 2007 (UTC) reply
