Anybody think we ought to add more recreation links? -- Ç 22:12, 8 June 2006 (UTC) reply

Comments for GAN

Congrats on the current state of the article, Finetooth. You should not encounter any major problems at GAN. I made a few minor edits, which we are welcome to discuss, and of course you are welcome to revert or change. The only other things I noticed was the 2010 census information was displayed before 2000 census details, which to me reads a bit funny. Plus 2000 comes before 2010 in the census table, so there is a bit of inconsistency here. Also, I mean no offense to Burns, but what is the culture like? The Paiute information is important, but are there any annual festivals, stats on political ideology, etc.? Just curious if you came across any information in your research. Again, great work! -- Another Believer ( Talk) 01:32, 11 April 2013 (UTC) reply

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to review this. Your point about the census is good and reminds me of my general doubts about the robo-insertion of two sets of demographic stats in city articles. I think it is relatively boring stuff to read and that using more than the most recent set puts too much emphasis on demographics. Do you think it would be OK to simply delete the 2000 census details, leaving only the 2010? Meanwhile, I will look for more cultural data and possibly voting patterns. These are both good ideas. Finetooth ( talk) 02:06, 11 April 2013 (UTC) reply
The more I thought about it, the more convinced I became that using two similar sets was overkill. I deleted the 2000 data except for the income data. I will see if I can find the income data for 2010 in the census archives. Finetooth ( talk) 03:38, 11 April 2013 (UTC) reply
Oops. The margins of error on the income stats for 2010 look enormous. I think I should leave the 2000 income stats at the bottom of the revised Demographics section after all. Finetooth ( talk) 03:59, 11 April 2013 (UTC) reply
Perhaps just note any major changes between 2000 and 2010? -- Another Believer ( Talk) 15:14, 11 April 2013 (UTC) reply
Figured it all out, I think. Then moved on to the cultural events. I had not discovered the Portland Youth Philharmonic (PYP) connection before taking your advice about cultural data. Very good advice. Birds, 4-H, and hammered dulcimers are part of the story too. If you think of anything else, my ears are open. Finetooth ( talk) 17:16, 11 April 2013 (UTC) reply
Great additions to the article. Most often when I am reading about cities on Wikipedia, I am searching for things to do, cultural activity, landmarks, history, etc. What is living in X City like? Well done! -- Another Believer ( Talk) 20:07, 11 April 2013 (UTC) reply

Initial thoughts

  • Can you confirm that where a citation appears at the end of a paragraph, it covers the material covered therein?
Reply: Yes. I generally use only one if it covers everything in the paragraph, but I use two or more if each covers only some of the claims in the paragraph. If you see any claims that you think need a citation in closer proximity, let me know, and I'll revise. Finetooth ( talk) 17:11, 17 June 2013 (UTC) reply
  • Does "Euro-American" refer to new european settlers to america or people of european ethnicity who moved westwards?
Reply: Broadly speaking, they were U.S. citizens who moved westwards. It seems likely to me that a few individuals of various backgrounds and ethnicities came from elsewhere, but I have nothing to support that idea. Finetooth ( talk) 17:11, 17 June 2013 (UTC) reply
  • Prose is fine
  • No copyvio found

    • By Euro-American, the article definitely means Americans of European ethnicity. I cannot answer your first question, though, since I wasn't the one who prepared this for a GAN. Jsayre64 (talk) 04:57, 17 June 2013 (UTC) reply

I have reviewed the rest of the criteria and since my computer restarted last time I wrote it all out, I shall just say it passes as a Good Article.-- Gilderien Chat| List of good deeds 19:46, 23 June 2013 (UTC) reply

Bundy militia's demand(s)

Regarding our article about the Occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge please consider commenting at that article's talk page on the question "Should we say anything more about Public Lands Privatization and demand feds cede ownership?" NewsAndEventsGuy ( talk) 10:24, 16 January 2016 (UTC) reply

@ NewsAndEventsGuy: Does this have anything to do with improving this article about Burns, Oregon? Otherwise, I'd caution you to make sure you're not WP:CANVASSING and say that the best way to get input is to drop a note at WT:ORE as WikiProject Oregon members are probably the only ones who closely watch this page, despite recent events. Valfontis ( talk) 17:58, 16 January 2016 (UTC) reply
P.S. I'm not saying you're in violation of the canvassing guidelines, as I have not looked closely, but you definitely seem to be spamming. Cheers, Valfontis ( talk) 18:00, 16 January 2016 (UTC) reply
For those playing along at WP:ANI or my talk page, by "spamming" I meant Wikipedia:Canvassing#Spamming and excessive cross-posting, not WP:SPAM. Valfontis ( talk) 23:02, 16 January 2016 (UTC) reply
OH... at ANI I thought you said something else, but that's fine. Thanks for pointing this specific provision out. I can make a case for how each page is related to the demands to cede ownership of federal lands, so in my judgment "excessive" was not what I was doing. But others disagree so I can live with that. NewsAndEventsGuy ( talk) 00:27, 17 January 2016 (UTC) reply
Thanks for the heads up, I know the rule well. Canvassing only occurs when you are trying to solicit people to agree with you. In contrast, there are lots of places in our guidelines that encourage leaving pointers of this sort so that other eds - even formidable debaters who disagree - will be alerted to the thread and invited to join. For example, see the first bullet point at.... well, at the canvassing rule, under the section appropriate notice. As for spamming, ironically I sent to several pages covering a wide spectrum specifically to avoid the appearance of canvassing. Thanks for your attention. I'm sure Burns enthusiasts will be glad when it is resolved NewsAndEventsGuy ( talk) 18:11, 16 January 2016 (UTC) reply
