Economic Development link

I've been zapping the BV Economic Development link for some time, and explained my rationale on it when questioned, as I considered it basically advertising. Am I that far off my rocker, considering that an anon has once again re-added the link? SchuminWeb ( Talk) 03:16, 20 April 2007 (UTC) reply

Pronunciation

I've lived around the area all of my life, and have never heard "bunna vista" (except maybe by out-of-towners). As long as I've been in the area it's been "byew-nuh vista." That's a bit of a head-scratcher for me. Thoughts? Artsygeek ( talk) 00:22, 30 December 2007 (UTC) reply

Don't forget that it's not the standard English alphabet that's being used there, but rather the International Phonetic Alphabet. Not being sufficiently versed in the IPA, I cannot confirm whether or not the pronunciation as you have described is being illustrated there, though I will confirm that you have described the correct pronunciation of the name of the town. Can anyone more familiar with the IPA than myself confirm that the IPA pronunciation is applied to reflect the correct pronunciation? SchuminWeb ( Talk) 06:56, 30 December 2007 (UTC) reply
If the correct pronunciation is as Artsygeek and SchuminWeb have described, the IPA form should be [ˌbju.nə'vɪs.tə]. If what is currently in the article ([bunna vista]) were correct IPA — which I'm certain it is not — it would sound something like "boon-nah vees-tah". (!) I think the page should note that that's how it's pronounced BY LOCALS, but if you've ever been to Buena Vista, you know they're not exactly the smartest bunch, so I don't know if you'd want to take what they call it as the actual pronunciation, or if it's really the Spanish pronunciation. I don't know; just food for thought. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.123.5.178 ( talk) 05:59, 5 September 2008 (UTC) reply
That is an absurd position. The town was settled and named by english speaking people and it is correctly pronounced AS THE LOCALS PRONOUNCE IT (bjúnə vɪ́stə). Do you want to go around tagging every article for towns like Staunton (VA), Calais (ME), Isle au Haut (ME), Buena Vista (CO) (who all pronounce the names of their towns differently than the foreign language from which they derived the name) making sure the world knows that YOU think they are pronouncing the name incorrectly? Do you go around correcting people for using ˈpærɪs instead of paʁi when referring to the french capital in an english sentence?
Totally agreed, and insulting the locals is just snobbishness. I suppose all the residents of the cities "mispronounced" in [1] are dopes as well. Fool4jesus ( talk) 15:25, 5 February 2016 (UTC) reply
In my opinion, the pronunciation described in the article should be the way people in and around the town pronounce it — and I really feel there's no need to say that's what is being shown, because I would think anyone reading the page should implicitly understand this. The question of whether the local pronunciation is "right" or "smart" is irrelevant. It's really the same as with a person with a name of foreign origin — the proper pronunciation of a person's name is the way he/she says his/her own name, and it really doesn't matter if it's an anglicized "butchering" of the original pronunciation. When I lived in Charlottesville I was told that towns with names like this are a shiboleth. If you pronounce it Spanish-style, locals from anywhere in the region immediately recognize that you're an outsider. Part of the lore was that it was used to ferret out Yankee spies during the Civil War. Sorry I have no citation.

Shibboleth or not, if that's the way locals pronounce it, that's the way it should be pronounced. When I was at Virginia Tech, the only pronunciation I heard was BEW-ne vis-ta. Fool4jesus ( talk) 15:25, 5 February 2016 (UTC) reply

Notable Residents

Shouldn't the famous author Orson Scott Card be included here? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.76.167.132 ( talk) 17:13, 1 April 2010 (UTC) reply

According to his article, he teaches at Southern Virginia University, but he lives in North Carolina. Maybe he's remote. If you know better, please update the article. Fool4jesus ( talk) 15:31, 5 February 2016 (UTC) reply

Orphaned references in Buena Vista, Virginia

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Buena Vista, Virginia's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "field":

  • From Maury River: Field Guide to the Chessie Nature Trail. Rockbrige Area Conservation Council, 1988.
  • From Chessie Nature Trail: Field Guide to the Chessie Nature Trail. Rockbridge Area Conservation Council. 1988.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 03:31, 1 May 2013 (UTC) reply
