I can't say when I first became aware of the term, but it has been decades. I see several mentions of "Big Bend area" and "
Big Bend Coast" in The Geology of Florida, published in 1997 by the University Press of Florida. I have also found that the Big Bend Seagrasses Aquatic Preserve was established in 1985.
[1] I am sure the term was in common use well before then.

Come to think of it, I probably first became aware of the term when I lived in Tallahassee in the mid-1970s. -
