I feel that the introduction could better suit Wikipedia's goal of neutrality if quantifiable information was given or perhaps a link was included to an article with the stats regarding amounts of deforestation taking place and estimated levels of carbon that have been released because of this deforestation. While there is a citation included, the final sentence of the 1st paragraph also makes predictions about the future which from my understanding should be avoided.
