The following is a closed discussion of a
requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a
move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: not moved. A primary topic needn't meet both criteria, but either criterion is a valid argument here. (
WP:GLOBAL is an article-content essay, not guideline or policy, and wouldn't factor in to arranging the pages.) --

– There is no other mononymous use of Ashanti that is prominent enough to warrant changing this article's title; it would be throwing a fork in the way of readers for no reason Happypillsjr✉ 22:50, 15 September 2020 (UTC)reply
Note: the page
Ashanti is a dab page with content. It is ineligible as a page move target unless it is also renamed. This request has been modified to reflect that fact. P.I. Ellsworthed.put'r there 08:03, 17 September 2020 (UTC)reply
What are the page views for this and other Ashantis? O.N.R.(talk) 01:02, 16 September 2020 (UTC)reply
Support Per PRIMARYTOPIC. This topic dominates
page views —

Oppose This is nonsensical, the Ashanti (or Asante) are an ethnic group in Ghana. Would violate
WP:GLOBAL --

Oppose The singer may be the only unambiguous use of "Ashanti" as a single word, but
Ashanti Empire and its various associated articles are arguably more significant, and certainly more encyclopedic, meanings of the term.
Tevildo (
talk) 09:57, 16 September 2020 (UTC)reply
Oppose. The Ashanti ethnic and cultural group and their empire are the clear primary topic. --
Necrothesp (

Oppose per what
WP:PRIMARYTOPIC actually says. @
Happypillsjr: were you not aware of the meaning of Ashanti? Would you like to consider withdrawing this proposal now?

Weak oppose This seems like one of those
Apple vs
Apple Inc. cases where even overwhelmingly clear interest in page views is overridden by consideration of long term significance.--
Yaksar(let's chat) 19:48, 16 September 2020 (UTC)reply
🍏 But the fruit is considered primary by long term significance at
Apple. In this case the supposed historical significance is insufficient to warrant a primary topic for that topic, but the page views favoring primary topic for the singer are overwhelming. So I don’t think the Apple comparison supports even a weak Oppose here. To the contrary. —
В²C☎ 00:04, 17 September 2020 (UTC)reply
Oppose per
WP:NOPRIMARY. The
Ashanti language and
Ashanti people, and many other topics such as
Ashanti Region, are likely to have far more long-term significance than this singer. The criterion for page views is not some kind of tie-breaker for long-term significance: both criteria must be met to establish a primary topic.

A requirement to meet both criteria is a misconception apparently held by all Supporters here. “In most cases, the topic that is primary with respect to usage is also primary with respect to long-term significance; in many other cases, only one sense of primacy is relevant.”. I hope the closer evaluates the !votes accordingly. —
