Perhaps we should start referring to it as the ides of April. No, I am not trying to be humorous, I am in fact being serious. It's probably a long way off from being a colloquialism.

How is the ending of the American civil war a tragedy? The death of Hitler? Can it be said the American revolution was a tragedy, or for the better of America? The air show crash and NASA deaths of just two people is also nothing compared to what happens every day in the world, and only seem to be listed because these things happened recently and people are fishing for something to post in the list. Overall, I'm most uncertain that April is special here, and that we could just as well make a section like "Tragic Month of X". The 'Tragic month of April' section is a bit peculiar - none of the other month articles has a similar section, and it feels a bit tabloid-y and unencyclopaedic. Consider: any tragic event has a 1/12 chance of happening in April. I'd like to merge the important events in it into a new 'Historical events' section. First democratic elections in South Africa hardly tragic - only if you're a rightwinger. The elections were universally praised for their lack of violence or bloodshed.
Now that you mention it, the whole section does seem a little forced, unless there's a classic definition of April as a tragic month. I'm going to get rid of the opening of Fenway Park in the middle of all of the death and bloodshed, because I think that was just some NYY fan dicking around. DirkLangeveld 13:08, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
- I say lose it. Like squeezeweasel said it's a one in twelve chance. Can anyone say definitivly that april has some sort of cosmic energy that causes it to be tragic? Of course not. So why should it be in an encyclopedia? - I agree. There's nothing saying April is more tragic than other months, and personally I find the section itself a bit of a tragedy. People are now starting to post 2 man deaths like that on NASA although much worse things are going on every day in the world. It seems like such things are only tragedies because they happened to US readers and recently in memory. The section was renamed to simply "Tragic Month" and although it's better that way (it doesn't make it sound like April is special anymore), I still doubt we need this section here. Why only tragic events for example? Why not cheerful events? And why only for April? Also, the content is already covered by the individual date articles alone, such as April 1. I agree that the section should be deleted and maybe replaced with a description, if absolutely necessary. There are just as many tragic events that happen in all of the other months of the year. Also, is "Argue about Gun Safety Week" an actual holiday or something placed there by a vandal?

Bede equates Eostur-monath with Aprilis (April). Aprilis is dedicated to the goddess Venus and Eostur is dedicated to the goddess Eostre. Venus is the "dawn star"/"east star". I wanted to leave a record of my reasons for changing the introduction to this article and those of other months. The start of the descriptions appeared to give undue weight to overly complicated statistics, such as 'It is the first of four months to have a length of 30 days, and the second of five months to have a length of less than 31 days.' These statistics were uncited. Albeit clearly correct, they appear to amount to 'original research' and their prominence appeared undue. Teacher1850 ( talk) 04:45, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
