There are several local names for the mountains, many of which Easterners will recognize as favorite vacation spots. These include the Catskills{{fact}}, the Poconos{{fact}}, the Finger Lakes{{fact}} area, and the Allegheny Mountains.

The Appalachian plateau is also known as the coal mining area, because it is the only region in Virginia that does coal mining. Other parts of the plateau are in West Virginia, Western Pennsylvania, and Western New York State {
