I deleted just about all of this as being NPOV. The real question is why is it here, instead of under Anastasio Somoza Garcia. -- Zoe

Most of what was here was pretty generic stuff about the family, not a great deal of use apart from in a History of Nicaragua article (and of course, exactly what was here was too biased for any article anyway). Debayle, however, was himself president for a while (I think) - I'll try to knock up a quick stub on him. -- Camembert

It says Somoza used "fraud" to win the 1974 elections. Where's the source?

"Soviet-backed." Actually the Sandinistas were Cuban-backed, though I suppose at this point in time Cuba could be essentially viewed as a Soviet proxy. I don't always like terms like "x-backed" because there are plenty of commentators who think that the Nicaraguan populace mostly hated Somoza Debayle and that the Sandinistas in the '70s had genuine popularity while simultaneously being supported by Castro. We should also keep in mind that in the last days of the regime the insurgent coalition was quite broad -- some prominent businessmen joined the political leadership -- it was in the post-revolutionary period when Ortega & co. started consolidated Marxism-Leninism as the official state ideology.

The US political agenda in Latin America is what has caused the chronic underdevelopment of these nations. Everytime the people where ready to excersise their rights of self- determination, another fascist dictator was exalted by the US. The only nation that has been able to maintain a liberal train of though has been Cuba and at what cost??? The systematic repulse by every US government since 1959. The only reason a nation turns to the radical idea of socialism is because the power held by the establishement has been so adverse and degrading, it deveplops a pathological aversion to capitalist ideas. The only way the US can erase the resentment of Latin America and put an end to the antimperialist xenophobia is by a drastic change of its international agenda. Instead of world police, world benefactor. Instead of putting up governments and militarily backing up regimes, respecting national structures and offering the economic, medical, gastronomic aid those governmnets need to conserve national approval. I have heard Somoza described as "African American". He doesn't look particularly "black" in the photo. I know that Latin Americans are very "mixed race" but is there any truth in this description?-- Jack Upland ( talk) 11:47, 23 January 2009 (UTC) reply

This account is confusing as it says that first the chauffeur was killed by gunfire and then the driver was killed because of the RPG. Or are the chauffeur and the driver the same person and 3 people were killed, not 4? That would be odd since the driver was mentioned to be a "passenger."

If they were the same person, it would be better that one word was used consistently (either "chauffeur" or "driver") and if the individual was named when they are first mentioned and not mentioned at all when discussing people who died from the RPG attack. 69.125.134.86 ( talk) 12:19, 10 July 2013 (UTC) reply

A data collector for Astrodatabank provided both the original birth certificate and an official transcript. The date of birth is 5 January (cinco enero in Spanish) and not December 1925.
