Current title of the article is incorrect

The title of this article is incorrect, the legal, proper and commonly referred name used is American Broadcasting Companies not Company. If you look at their copyright and trademarks as well as the SEC filing when it was publicly traded it uses Companies. Therefore if there is no objections I'd like to move the Article from American Broadcasting Company > American Broadcasting Companies. YborCityJohn ( talk) 15:00, 24 June 2017 (UTC)

Considering how many times the article title has been discussed, I'd highly advise a formal move request with sources to show your position. oknazevad ( talk) 15:41, 24 June 2017 (UTC)
@ User:Oknazevad, ok done, I've opened up a discussion to move and provided references and evidence of why the move should be done. YborCityJohn ( talk) 16:51, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

American Broadcasting Company American Broadcasting CompaniesABC's legal entity name is the American Broadcasting Companies, per their incorporation in the State of New York, see here and if you go here to the Delaware Secretary of State Corporation database and enter American Broadcasting as the search it will display the company as the American Broadcasting Companies, additionally the State of California Secretary of State database here (Note, you need to enter the name manual they don't allow links to files) shows the company incorporated as the American Broadcasting Companies with addresses in New York at 77 West 66th Street (ABC headquarters) and 500 South Buena Vista Street, Burbank, CA (Disney's headquarters). Also the various trademark registrations with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, here, here, here and here. Given the amount evidence that I have provided I'd feel a move is warranted. YborCityJohn ( talk) 16:49, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

  • Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME. There is additional historical justification, given that according to our Blue Network article, the network's early radio arm had, for a time, addressed itself as "the Blue Network of the American Broadcasting Company." ViperSnake151  Talk  17:17, 26 June 2017 (UTC)
  • Oppose once again per COMMONNAME. It's time to stop nominating this regularly; barring ABC itself being dissolved in an amazing fall of grace it's just not going to happen. Nate ( chatter) 17:29, 26 June 2017 (UTC)
  • Oppose per COMMONNAME - Give up! - It's not ever going to be moved. – Davey2010 Talk 17:55, 26 June 2017 (UTC)
  • Oppose. per COMMONNAME. Just because American Broadcasting Companies, Inc. exists doesn't mean that it is ABC TV network. The current ABCs Inc. seems to be a IP holding company for Disney-ABC Group and owns KABC TV station as best I have been able to find out. ABCs hold the ABC Family trademarks despite ABC Family Worldwide is a separate corporation. So the fact that it exists and that it holds various trademarks doesn't make it ABC TV network. For a while the network was just a division of American Broadcasting-Paramount Theatres and if WP existed then the name of the article would have still been American Broadcasting Company. Spshu ( talk) 20:32, 26 June 2017 (UTC)
  • Oppose, "Company" is more common than "Companies". I'll be honest, the only way to stop these move requests is to move the page to "ABC (U.S. TV channel)" or something similar with "ABC" in it. 2601:8C:4001:DCB9:8BB:55F:E0BA:1473 ( talk) 20:55, 26 June 2017 (UTC)
    • No, ABC is a "TV network" in every sense of the term, not a "TV channel" (e.g. different affiliates are found on different "channels" in different cities). The correct proposal would be ABC (U.S. TV network). -- IJBall ( contribstalk) 02:17, 30 June 2017 (UTC)
  • Comment: This is the first time I've made such a request so give me a break K, Its not like I'm constantly posting the request over and over again. YborCityJohn ( talk) 00:55, 27 June 2017 (UTC)
It wasn't towards you at all; if there was an easy way to disambiguate all the ABC networks in the world, I'd immediately be for that solution. But we're stuck with the deck MediaWiki offers us, and for now, the full name ending with 'y' is the perfect DAB. As I've said in the past (this is in response to the IPV6), adding a whole lot of periods, parentheticals and other words just makes everyone's job harder, so its easier to just use the full network name. And honestly, the only place American Broadcasting Companies is used is in corporation documents, lawsuits and payroll checks, which shouldn't be the be-all-end-all of sources; common sense should outweigh everything else. The result of the move request was: not moved. This is completely malformed, as the disambiguation fails WP:CAPS. And the request is the same as every failed request for the past few years. American Broadcasting CompanyABC (Television Network) – Always referred to as ABC and never by the full name. 68.195.141.2 ( talk) 20:47, 16 September 2017 (UTC)

  • 'Oppose WP:COMMONNAME and per the same reasons I've listed the last few move requests; still the name legally, on paychecks, in business and on legal documents, and the perfect disambiguation at this point because other ABC's exist in the world (and it is still used on-air). It may be time to stop any further move requests; enough. Nate ( chatter) 22:58, 16 September 2017 (UTC)

If I married my grandmother, I'd be my father's father?

The infobox in this article lists the company's parent as ABC Entertainment. The infobox at ABC Entertainment lists its parent as ABC. Well? Largoplazo ( talk) 13:33, 24 December 2019 (UTC)

Mention of 90s slogan in the lead

I have three major issues with the repeated attempts to add this. Firstly, it's unsourced completely. That's a huge thing. Secondly, it was a slogan, not a formal renaming, which it's being mischaracterized as. Thirdly, it's insignificant in the history of the network being it lasted for maybe a year tops, which for a network that's been around for over three quarters of a century (and actually more when one considers its origins as the NBC Blue Network) is really not important enough of a detail to include in the lead, especially when it's not mentioned elsewhere at all; I'd advise those looking to add it to read WP:LEAD again. oknazevad ( talk) 06:15, 23 January 2020 (UTC)

I agree 100% about it not belonging in the lead and 99% about it being trivial in the context of the abundance of much more substantive information there is to be present about this large and long-running operation. The implication behind its original insertion was that the company's name was different from "American Broadcasting Company" at some point. But it wasn't. So let's dispense with the publicity stunt that was a play on its name but which isn't any more relevant to the article than any of their other publicity campaigns. American Broadcasting Company ABC (U.S. TV channel) – We don't call TLC, "The Learning Channel" or HBO, "Home Box Office". Unreal7 ( talk) 20:59, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

  • Procedural comment: There was an RfC about "U.S." vs "American" usage for TV shows which also covers the networks for consistency and the result was to use "American". Also, ABC is a network. -- Gonnym ( talk) 08:59, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
  • Oppose per WP:NATURALDIS. Gonnym's other points are 100% correct, but no move is necessary here. -- IJBall ( contribstalk) 14:49, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
  • Oppose - also per WP:NATURALDIS. Since we already have a suitable alternative that doesn't require parenthetical disambiguation, then we should keep it. — Starforce13 15:01, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
  • Oppose per WP:NATURALDIS. oknazevad ( talk) 16:03, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
  • Oppose per WP:NATURALDIS as stated above, and noting the pertinent differences between ABC on one hand and TLC and HBO on the other. TLC, a production of Discovery, Inc., is now called only TLC, and "The Learning Channel" is a former name by which it is no longer known. HBO has been deemed the primary topic for the title "HBO" so it is being used without disambiguation and, therefore, sheds no light on the titling of the article about ABC. Suggest splitting history section to new article

I feel that this article is a bit too long (almost double the recommendations of WP:LENGTH and WP:SPLITSIZE) and I think the easiest way to deal with this would be to split the history section into History of the American Broadcasting Company. I would note that something similar has already happened with ABC Sports and History of ABC Sports. At present, the history section of this article is way too detailed for a casual reader, and I feel that (after splitting the current content) this should be replaced with a summary giving just enough context to understand the rest of the article. –  Reidgreg ( talk) 22:28, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

Title

What is the reason for using "American Broadcasting Company" for the article title? Could "ABC (American TV network)" work? I ask because it's preferred, on Wikipedia, to use commonly used titles. Infinite mission ( talk) 01:55, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

Look at the previous move discussions. Short version: "ABC" has too many other meanings, so a parenthetical disambiguator would need to be added. But, if there's an alternative without parentheses that is possible, then we should use that instead. (See WP:NATDIS). In this case, using the spelled out version of the initials is that alternative. oknazevad ( talk) 01:21, 19 August 2021 (UTC)

It is the fifth-oldest major broadcasting network in the world

I added Citation needed tag, but really it's more in need of clarification.

<quote>It is the fifth-oldest major broadcasting network in the world</quote>

  • How do we define "major"?
  • How do we define "broadcast network"?
  • Is there any single source (external or on Wikipedia) where this fact can be verified? Crazytonyi ( talk) 21:34, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
