Definition

The definition that was given here before for acid dyes was wrong. It read "Acid dye is a dye that at first burns but then slowly seeps into the substance applied to change the colour." This is completely untrue. The definition right now is not that great still. I'm thinking of a better one. At the very least there's nothing solid provided to distinguish acid dyes from direct dyes.
