2channel users are not right-wing. Japanese traitorous news media and anti-Japan far-right non-Japanese news media must not label 2channel as "internet right-wing". This article is very biased. Non-Japanese far-right racists obstructed my fair editing. They labeld my fair editing as vandalism. They must stop suppression of free speech. Update this article

I'd do it myself, but I'm unmotivated and find citing sources and whatnot irritating as shit, especially when trying to get sauces for widespread memes or stuff from threads in DATochi. Aren't there any other regular 2ch'ers who speak English here? From reading this article, it seems most of you haven't been on 2ch for a couple years or so. -SAGAkenmin

The creator dissapeared?

I heard the guy who ran 2ch has dissapeared to get away from the lawsuits. Is there any fact to this?

Yeah, there's fact to it in that that's what the media is saying in Japan. In reality, he just didn't go to court and ignored the lawsuits. I saw him at an event at Waseda University last week, where he claimed that he wasn't trying to "disappear," he just figured that the prosecution will give up if he ignores them (he's used that tactic before and it worked). -SAGAkenmin The creator did not disappear as you said he was fired from 2channel because he used user data and cencerd posts because large corporations paid him a large sum of money to. He was fired for those reasons. [1]

Real life incidents under Culutre?

This definitely brightens up the Culture category. Cases when people post significant questions about their lives, usually romantic, and asks 2ch'ers for advice. They then report back what has happened and so it continues into a real life story. It appears that enough detail is reported for them to be made into manga.

Cases I know of:

Train Man (Densha Otoko)

Molester Man

Husky and Medley

Edit: Haha, Densha Otoko is already on here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.86.113.236 ( talk) 03:22, 15 January 2013 (UTC) reply

About the name of this article

The romanizations of 2channel are as follows:

  1. "Channel 2", by the New York Times etc. This is just bad reporting, "correcting" a name that doesn't actually mean a TV channel.
  2. "Ni-Channel", by Mainichi News. This indicates the proper pronounciation but should not be used as the title because it doesn't indicate how the name is spelled in Japanese.
  3. "2channel". This is correct and is a proper name for this article.
  4. "2ch". This is an abbreviation and the name of the Web server. Historically it is the name of this article.

2ch is not "BBS" as defined in the other entry on Wikipedia. "BBS" in English mainly refers to the old, pre-www-era computer communication system (パソコン通信 in Japanese). Online discussion forum, message board, or the like is a more appropriate term to describe it. ( Hermeneus 11:56 18 Jul 2003 (UTC))

According to AcronymFinder,BBS = Bulletin Board System

Btw, there's another site that pretty much resembles 2ch.net called 2chan.net, maybe it should be noted?

2chan.net is known as Futaba Channel and is different from 2ch in that it centers around image uploading, not discussion threads.

The above comment is correct. Anyway there is an article on 2chan a.k.a. Futaba Channel now. Hermeneus ( talk) 06:04, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)
It's not a "true" BBS, but the Japanese use the term BBS much more broadly (for pretty much any sort of message board; even guestbooks are sometimes labelled "BBSes") Gwalla | Talk 29 June 2005 02:39 (UTC)

Find me one thing that makes a "ga" sound upon hitting. lysdexia 22:45, 6 Nov 2004 (UTC)

"ga" is a onomatopoeia used for sound of hitting something in Japanese.
As for hitting itself, it's not for fixing a problem. Originally, one person created a thread " Call NullPointerException Nullpo" and then the second poster posted an " AA", hitting the first poster with a hammer. After that it becomes almost ritual to hit someone who says "Nullpo". Because "Nullpo" sounds funny, many 2ch'ers started to use it as a funny non-sense word. Kusunose 07:28, 7 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Kusunose is correct. Ashibaka 22:26, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)
It's 'nurupo', not 'nullpo'. Since it has no widespread use outside of 2ch and derived works, it's best to leave it as romanji. る = 'ru' 12Shark 10:36, 13 January 2006 (UTC) reply

Perhaps more examples of 2ch-slang (2ch語) can be added, like 禿同(はげどう), which is short for 激しく同意する; intentionally spelled with different kanji. I know there are more than this.

I prefer jargon to "slang" or "terminology" to refer to the language used in 2ch.-- Outis 08:39, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)

2ch is extraordinary large board. it's not regular phpBB board. Sometimes number of online people@2ch are bigger than number of people who watch japanese TV! it's phenomenon of japanese internet. More than a million people post comments on Channel 2 every day, and the site gets 600 million page views a month.
2ch is the most popular website in japan excluding ISP sites, according to Alexa. The Japanese wikipedia has articles upon articles related to 2ch, so it's definitely notable.

no, su"ru" is a future form , shi-ro is a command form. So Nihon wa hansei shi"ro", Japan, Apologise or Apologise, Japan. Shiru on the other hand is juice so Apolojuice is the right translation. FWBOarticle

Etymology

If anyone has any information on why it's called 2channel, please add that, unless I missed it. -- LakeHMM 05:53, 4 May 2006 (UTC) reply

Hiroyuki says he wanted a name that wasn't related to him, in order to advocate the spirt of Anonymous. Also, he mentions that channel 2 was the channel used to play video games back in the day.

Grammar?

2channel has a conflicting relationship with Koreans. As 2channel is anonymous, having suppressed criticsim of Korea and Koreans living in Japan are often posted. For instance in the time that there is no 2channel the problem of many people taken away by North Korea, Takeshma Problem, the problem of selling stimulant secretly by Koreans living in Japan, the Pachinko problem(gambling done by Mainly Koreans living in Japan and a part of its profit is sent to North Korea), were almost suppressed away from mass arguent.

I'm sorry, could someone translate this into grammatically correct English? I'm having a hard time understanding what the writer is trying to say. -- 70.49.89.167 19:15, 22 May 2006 (UTC) reply

Forum size comparison

This is two to three times larger than the largest Internet forum on big-boards.com.

Is this comparision sound? And what does it compare? From the references:

1172194367 Total postcount Gaia Online
   2499719 Current daily postcount 2channel
7000000000 Current daily postcount 2channel * lifetime 2channel (approx)
600000 Total postcount Gaia Online / lifetime Gaia Online (approx)

The second-to-last figure is necessarily an overestimate of the total postcount, since 2channel would have had a lower daily postcount at the beginnign of its life. The last figure similarly must be an underestimate.

So my question is this: Which figures have been compared, how and why, and how can we use the cited references to see for ourselves that the assertion "2channel is 2 à 3 times larger than Gaia Online" that these references intend to back up is indeed correct? 82.139.85.81 23:38, 15 October 2007 (UTC) reply

Commercial/noncommercial designation

2ch is most definitely a commercial website. Its founder, Hiroyuku, gets approx. JPY 100 million (USD 1 million) per year from advertisements and memberships, as revealed through a Wired.com interview. He has a staff of over 300 volunteer administrators who do not receive pay; he keeps all the profits for himself.

Never assume that a website is non-commercial based on appearance or server downtime. I had to go through this discussion with 4chan as well. In general, if a site has advertisements of any kind, it is commercial. If a site sells paid memberships, optional or not, it is commercial. If a site solicits its members for "donations," it is commercial, unless the website is a certified nonprofit organization and/or charity like the Wikimedia Foundation.
