We are not pretending to be a news source here. This article will get drafted into into an encyclopedic article just like any of these have. Just because an event is only a few hours old doesn't mean an encyclopedic article can not be created. Gopher backer ( talk) 04:23, 15 March 2008 (UTC) reply

Exactly, this happened like 4 hours ago...and information is still not out yet. The fact it came out of nowhere also meant there was nothing to write about until it touched down. CrazyC83 ( talk) 04:25, 15 March 2008 (UTC) reply

Merge

Another article is going on this. I'll work on merging them here Gopher backer ( talk) 06:09, 15 March 2008 (UTC) reply

Standards

This article urgently needs to be brought up to standards. WP:SEVERE members should know these and help to get the article up to standards. More references are urgently needed, I have put a few more in the top parts of the article, but more references are needed. Remember, No original research! Also, please do not use information from live news reports that can not be referenced. Southern Illinois SKYWARN ( talk) 14:17, 15 March 2008 (UTC) reply

New outbreak

The Atlanta tornado page should be merged into a new page for today's likely outbreak. If you know WP:SEVERE's standards, the Atlanta tornado will go under "Significant storms". As a side, looking at the damage photos, do not expect a rating anytime soon, as a Quick Response Team will probably have to come from Norman. Southern Illinois SKYWARN ( talk) 14:25, 15 March 2008 (UTC) reply

Maybe, maybe not. A moderate risk verifying does not guarantee an article, but it is possible depending on what happens. As for the rating, the damage looks like high-end EF2 or low-end EF3. CrazyC83 ( talk) 14:27, 15 March 2008 (UTC) reply
Agree. If there happens to only be one more tornado today and it's an EF0 that touches down in an open field, you don't need to automatically need to rename the article in an Outbreak format. You make an article on what's notable, and that can be decided later. Gopher backer ( talk) 15:41, 15 March 2008 (UTC) reply
Or even a bunch of weak tornadoes. Those would be well covered at Tornadoes of 2008#March 14-15. CrazyC83 ( talk) 15:53, 15 March 2008 (UTC) reply
The main reason a Quick Response team would have to come in is everyone's relative inexperience in surveying downtown damage. As I compare against the EF scale guidlines on the SPC page, it looks like it could be at least an EF-3 with some of the new damage photos coming in. Southern Illinois SKYWARN ( talk) 14:32, 15 March 2008 (UTC) reply
Maybe we should add a section with other tornadoes indeed. There has been a tornado through downtown Oneonta, Alabama causing quite a bit of damage and I even heard on ABC 33-40 that one person was trapped. JForget 16:19, 15 March 2008 (UTC) reply
I think the best thing to do would be to start something up a sandbox, and if it becomes apparent that it's article worthy then we can weave things together. Gopher backer ( talk) 16:49, 15 March 2008 (UTC) reply

High risk issued. A name to start could be Mid-March 2008 tornado outbreak or March 2008 tornado outbreak with the likely hood of it being moved to Mid-March 2008 tornado outbreak sequence or March 2008 tornado outbreak sequence on Monday or Tuesday. --- CWY2190 T C 20:24, 15 March 2008 (UTC) reply

I like the Mid-March 2008 outbreak (dab from March 6-7), and Atlanta moves to a large section. Make it part of an Outbreak Sequence if Monday and Tuesday are bad. After all, a verifying high risk almost always warrants an article. Since it involves a large-scale change to the article, a sandbox might be the place to go to develop this. CrazyC83 ( talk) 21:17, 15 March 2008 (UTC) reply

Sandbox at User:CrazyC83/Outbreak0315. CrazyC83 ( talk) 21:51, 15 March 2008 (UTC) reply

Probably Atlanta tornado outbreak would be the appropriate name for now unless there have been several fatalities (looks like it is 2 as of now). We could throw in the list of tornadoes into the article immediately since they will likely be on the same article. There is already 24 reports today. -- JForget 00:19, 16 March 2008 (UTC) reply
At the moment that would probably be best, since today's reports (so far) fall just short of warranting an article. CrazyC83 ( talk) 00:33, 16 March 2008 (UTC) reply
That works for me. --- CWY2190 T C 00:45, 16 March 2008 (UTC) reply
I've merged the tornado list to the main article for now. Any objections for that move right away? -- JForget 00:50, 16 March 2008 (UTC) reply
No objections. --- CWY2190 T C 01:06, 16 March 2008 (UTC) reply

The format is a bit unusual right now, but I have no problem with such for now as while this round is over, it becomes a wait-and-see game - what happens next week will determine the ultimate format here.

My opinion is that if next week (starting Monday) is not a major outbreak and just isolated tornadoes (if anything), it should remain separate on its own at Tornadoes of 2008#March 17-19 (or whatever it turns out to be, the section is currently inexistant and won't be added until it happens or at least a moderate risk is issued). If it turns out to be a major outbreak, it should be added here as an outbreak sequence. CrazyC83 ( talk) 03:42, 16 March 2008 (UTC) reply

So is this article now need to be developed to be about the March 14-15 tornado outbreak with the Atlanta tornado getting a large subsection? --- CWY2190 T C 04:10, 16 March 2008 (UTC) reply
That would be the best format, but this article seems to be getting a lot of edits by local (Atlanta) editors who do not know our standards and want to keep the article all about themselves. I agree that the Atlanta tornado was major, but we should also talk about the outbreak. Southern Illinois SKYWARN ( talk) 13:46, 16 March 2008 (UTC) reply

New storms?

Based on the doppler and a couple tornado and thunderstorm warnings, it appears that another last line of storms are heading towards Atlanta. I don't know if it will cause any damage, but it looks like there could be some 60+ mph winds in it, so the article might need some updating. Fatalities?

Where did that info come from? I've seen reports of two fatalities from NW Georgia outside of Atlanta, but not from this smaller tornado that hit Atlanta. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.251.4.69 ( talk) 00:27, 16 March 2008 (UTC) reply

Yep, NO fatalities. "Law enforcement officials said that after an initial search, they have found no fatalities from Saturday's storms. At least 27 people were hurt Friday night, though no injuries were believed to be life-threatening." from FOX NEWS. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.251.4.69 ( talk) 00:30, 16 March 2008 (UTC) reply

That's what I thought... CrazyC83 ( talk) 00:33, 16 March 2008 (UTC) reply

Tornado table

The main problem with the tornado table is the Atlanta tornado. It says there were two deaths, which there weren't, and it points people to a nonexsitant section. I will go ahead and remove the two deaths unless someone else has heard otherwise. Southern Illinois SKYWARN ( talk) 13:42, 16 March 2008 (UTC) reply

Agreed, they should be removed. CrazyC83 ( talk) 14:57, 16 March 2008 (UTC) reply

Overhead map/Diagram?

I think a map or a diagram to show the path of the damage would be more helpful to those that aren't from the Atlanta area and for those that wish to move in the area as well. If someone can work on it once the excitement settles down a bit. -- Hourick ( talk) 18:16, 16 March 2008 (UTC) reply

I removed the image because an edited copyrighted DeLorme map cannot be PD-self. -- 213.155.231.26 ( talk) 12:56, 17 March 2008 (UTC) reply

It *could* have been considered Fair Use under the NFCC, however. It's probably going to become moot later today or tomorrow, though, as (based on their history) WSO Peachtree City will probably post their own track map soon enough, which will be PD as a US Government product, and also avoid any OR concerns. Rdfox 76 ( talk) 13:03, 17 March 2008 (UTC) reply
Well, I didn't expect a proper map for enough information to be found for a week or so. if it's to be done, get it done right the first time. Hopefully the map that WSO will post will be of good quality. -- Hourick ( talk) 16:22, 17 March 2008 (UTC) reply
There's no Fair Use at Commons. -- Matthiasb-DE ( talk) 13:22, 23 March 2008 (UTC) reply
