This page was proposed for deletion on the following grounds. "Military sub-units such as batteries are not regarded as sufficiently notable". The following arguments are in favor of keeping this article.
During the American Civil War, though regiment-sized artillery units were formed by the federal government and the individual states, the individual batteries (often lettered A through M, omitting J) served separately.
While a few batteries served in garrisons or remote outposts for the entire war, most batteries (such as 1st U.S. Artillery, Battery F) had a unique existence including serving in a significant number of battles.

List of Illinois Civil War units#Artillery units. This is only an example. Other U.S. states have similar articles.
