This article says that John Jay was the first American Minister to Spain. This may be true -- does this mean Ambassador? According to
John Jay, he was the President of the Continental Congress at this time. So the statement that he was the American Minsiter to Spain is in any event misleading.

JJ was elected President of Congres in December 1778. He served in this capacity until he was appointed Minister Plenipotentiary to Spain in September 1779. See Walter Stahr's biography of Jay, chapter 5.
