The article states "the Russian fleet sailed from the Baltic, through the Mediterranean, down the Red Sea, [and] across the Indian Ocean" to get to Tsushima. It is my recollection, however, that the jumpy Russians, fearing Japanese attack, fired on some British fishing vessels in the North Sea (thinking them to be Japanese torpedo boats in the fog), in response to which the Brits closed the Suez Canal to them. Consequently, the Russians had to go "the long way" around Africa, adding thousands of miles to their already-long journey.
