Disambiguation

@ Boleyn: Why de-disambiguate? "Pentadic" does not exclusively refer to Pentadic numerals. It can refer to anything pertaining to a "pentad", and there are reliable sources that use it in reference to 5-adic numbers (eg. [1]) so it at least seems plausible to disambiguate between Pentadic numerals and p-adic number (which is the target for redirects like 3-adic, for example). Triadic does exactly that. I also added Quinary to the list because that was the original target, even though it was questionable, but I understand removing that one. – Scyrme ( talk) 18:47, 26 August 2022 (UTC) reply

Hi scyrme. The article doesn't state that 'pentadic' is another term for 5-acidic, so wouldn't meet the criteria for entry. IT doesn't mention 'pentad' as an alternative term within the article either. A link at the top of 'pentadic numerals' to the 'pentad' page could be an option or pentadic redirecting to pentad, and that dab covering both pentad and pentadic. @ Boleyn: Hi. I never said "pentad" was an alternative term for 5-adic numbers; I said "pentadic" specifically is an alternative term. What I meant was that "pentad" is the noun from which the adjective "pentadic" is derived; this is explained on the Wiktionary entry that was linked on the dab page (as well as in any dictionary). The link to Wiktionary was one of the reasons why the dab is more helpful than a redirect.
The "p" in "p-adic" stands for any prime number. You can substitute any prime number or its appropriate numerical prefix; dyadic, triadic, pentadic, heptadic, hendecadic, etc. p-adic number doesn't explain any of this because it would be excessive. It's not a list article, so it doesn't bother specifically explaining every single one of these basic terms. It's still an appropriate target, and anyone looking for that topic would understand why p-adic number is listed. (More general coverage of this terminology in mathematics, including a list, exists at Arity#Terminology.)
Is a dab page covering both the noun and the adjective the usual solution for these situations? It doesn't seem to be. Triad and Triadic are two different lists. (Apologies for the long response.) – Scyrme ( talk) 18:21, 27 August 2022 (UTC) reply
@ Shhhnotsoloud: I'd still prefer this redirect be reverted back into a disambiguation page, per my arguments above. Pentadic (disambiguation) shouldn't be deleted until this is resolved.
@ Boleyn: I would appreciate a reply. (Nevermind, I retract my objection; see below.)Scyrme ( talk) 16:51, 17 September 2022 (UTC) reply
@ Scyrme: I think the new hatnote at Pentadic numerals will suffice. Shhhnotsoloud ( talk) 17:05, 17 September 2022 (UTC) reply
Ah, you changed it. Alright, looking at that, fair enough. That works.
In that case, feel free to get Pentadic (disambiguation) deleted. I won't object further. – Scyrme ( talk) 17:09, 17 September 2022 (UTC) reply
