Conflict of interest: I have done writing/editing work for rare disease physicians, researchers, and family advocacy groups, including Dr. Maria Escolar. I have proposed an article about Dr. Escolar because one of the greatest needs expressed by families of children with rare neurodevelopmental disorders is finding a specialist who can diagnose and assess their child. These disorders tend to be rapidly progressive, painful, and fatal. Escolar is considered an expert in leukodystrophies, lysosomal disorders, and other rare inherited metabolic disorders -- many families who have their children seen by Dr. Escolar say that she is the best hope for other families in the same situation.
I have done my best to use a neutral point of view and avoid areas of controversy (e.g., newborn screening for leukodystrophies). I believe Escolar's contribution to the field is noteworthy and that a Wikipedia article about her would be valuable to pediatricians who need to refer patients to a specialist in inherited neurodevelopmental disorders and to families trying to find information about their child's diagnosis.
