indexing may be defined as deviding any part in diffrent equeal parts & indexing head is device wich help in such a manner. 221.132.113.179 19:39, 16 August 2007 (UTC)Ameer Ahmed koraee
It seems to me that dividing and indexing are two completely separate types of operation. In indexing the workpiece is only machined at a particular index position. It is not machined between one index position and another. There is no worm driving it so the workpiece is not fixed enough to machine it between two indexing positions. On a dividing head the workpiece is driven round using a worm drive. So it can be machined as it rotates. 81.99.126.52 ( talk) 16:10, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
The article makes it sound like the worm/screw gear is a requirement, but this is either obviously not true or there needs to be a second term for the kind of dividing arrangements that don't incorporate gears. There's also no mention of indexing rings existing on many (esp watchmaker's) lathe headstocks. 2001:2003:F462:1C00:F66D:4FF:FEAC:4454 ( talk) 20:32, 18 October 2016 (UTC)

Sort of strange there is no reference to Jesse Ramsden.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.243.106.82 ( talk) 00:35, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
The photo in the article is of a dividing head with an indexing facility. 92.41.183.231 ( talk) 17:49, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
