Although only a proposal, .shop is gaining support for acceptance. Traditional search engines do not recognize .shop because of its preceeding period. Those wishing to learn more about the top-level domain need to be able to search for .shop in a knowledgebase to learn about its history and expectations. .shop is not a proposal but a history of the progress of an new Top Level domain name.

There are other wikipedia pages with other proposed TLD's that as a valuable insight to the formation of the current internet.
