Laos is divided into 17
provinces (khoueng ) and one prefecture (kampheng nakhon ) which includes the capital city Vientiane (Nakhon Louang Viangchan ).
Provinces are further divided into
districts (muang ) and then villages (ban ). An 'urban' village is essentially a town.
