The whole reason for the Republicans being demolished in the 30s was that their laissez-faire, economically right-wing and conservative policies had been associated with the horror of the Great Depression, My apologies for reverting the last time without providing a source, as I was looking at it as fait accompli, rather than something that needs evidence.)
