Hi, great to see a Portal Iceland has come into existence in the en.wikipedia. I'm one of the few editors of the
Portal:Island in the German Wikipedia and I have long awaited that day ;-) I hope a few new good articles come into existence that way. If there is any article in the German wikipedia that you would like to have translated into english or there is a new great article here that I can translate into german, just tell me or contact the team on the discussion page of the german Portal:Island. --

Greetings, portal peer reviewers! The
Iceland Portal currently has 12 selected articles (most either featured or good article status), 13 selected pictures, 11 selected biographies, 10 DYK hooks (all mentioned content randomized with {{Random portal component}} and {{Random subpage}}). The images shown in the introduction are also randomized, and the news section has recent headlines. I would greatly appreciate feedback on the portal. Thanks for your time! Happy editing, [sd] 04:02, 5 January 2008 (UTC)reply
It's excellent, much better than the
Portal:Iceland I stopped editing months ago :-P. In fact, I think I should adopt the randomizer to other portals, coz it's a practical solution for most of them that hardly see their selected content renovated. Anyway, I think that everything's perfect and this could be a good candidate for featured status. Could have a "Quote" section though, but I think that's a not an essential presence. Kudos to
User:Sd31415 for his excellent work. Húsönd 04:11, 5 January 2008 (UTC)reply
Happy new year, Husond, and thanks! I agree a quote section would be good, but
Wikiquote seems to have little about Iceland. I have a question — should a selected quotes section have quotes said by Icelanders or quotes about Iceland as a country? Cheers, [sd] 04:19, 5 January 2008 (UTC)reply
Happy New Year for you too. Yeah, quotes could be scarce indeed, but I guess both quotes by Icelanders and quotes about Iceland would do. Regards, Húsönd 04:26, 5 January 2008 (UTC)reply
YDone. I've created a Selected quotes section with 10 quotes about Iceland. — [sd] 05:23, 5 January 2008 (UTC)reply
Overall, a really good portal! :) In fact, I think the only thing I can suggest is to reduce the dates in the News section from
January 4,
2008 to something like
Jan 4: only. I like how the picture in the side of the Introduction changes from Flag to Coat of Arms and to the location map, a nice idea. I think this will do well at a FPOC. Spebi 21:41, 5 January 2008 (UTC)reply
Thanks for your comments! YDone — the format of the dates has been changed from January 4,
2008 to Jan 4. The idea of the images in the introduction rotating came from the
Electronics Portal. Best regards, [sd] 23:02, 5 January 2008 (UTC)reply
Comments.
Polish up that gold star! ;-)
When in doubt, add more images! Main topics could use one or two. I would show the featured picture in the box where it's listed. If I could change one thing, I would use the Selected quotes style used in
Portal:Sustainable development for the images. It's also somewhat easier to balance out columns when the variable lengths quotes box spans the full page.
I've added an image to the Main topics section and have shown the featured picture in the Featured and good content section. I've also used the Selected quotes style you mentioned. [sd] 13:15, 6 January 2008 (UTC)reply
I've also put a newspaper icon in the Current news section. [sd] 13:19, 6 January 2008 (UTC)reply
"Current news" is a "baby puppy." :-) "News" would be sufficient.
The Selected panorama section and its images look fine to me. When in doubt, my motto is let someone else delete it.

Overall, great job!
Could use at least an additional five randomized hooks in the Did you know section.
The bot's great, but
the Iceland Portal on Wikinews isn't regularly updated (the latest story there is from October). [sd] 13:15, 6 January 2008 (UTC)reply
Categories section could use some sort of creative little related icon in the upper right corner.
Featured and good content -- Show the featured pictures using <gallery></gallery>.
YDone. I added the image using [[Image:Iceland Grimsvoetn 1972-B.jpg|75px]] because the gallery took up too much space. Thanks for all your helpful comments! Cheers, [sd] 13:15, 6 January 2008 (UTC)reply
That's all I got for now.
Cirt (

Wow, great work, quick responses to my comments! I may take another look later, but I can't really find anything else glaring to improve on at the moment.
Cirt (

Well, not exactly quick. Thanks for your comments, [sd] 13:51, 6 January 2008 (UTC)reply
Comments - A good portal. But I just have a few things to voice.
How come the Die Another Day selected article doesn't have a picture. Could
this one be used?
I've added the image. [sd] 15:06, 6 January 2008 (UTC)reply
I'm not sure about the Read more... in the Selected Quote section, I'm sure it can be overlooked if it has only one entry. (Which I think is already mentioned)
I've changed it back to the previous format (linking to the person). [sd] 15:06, 6 January 2008 (UTC)reply
Could the Related Portals section be made smaller? There is a good number in there at the moment (which is good), but just reducing the size of images can make the box smaller.
The size of most images is 80px, same as other featured portals, like the
North West England and
Basque Portals. I would put them on one line, but that wouldn't fit in some resolutions. [sd] 15:06, 6 January 2008 (UTC)reply
Could the Selected Quote section be moved somewhere else, currently there seems to a big gap between the biography and panorama?
I've archived some news, which helped. [sd] 15:06, 6 January 2008 (UTC)reply
And one last thing, could the portal be reduced itself anyway?, it's seems slightly lengthy at the moment.
Rudget. 14:14, 6 January 2008 (UTC)reply
The largest section was Main topics, I've shortened that quite a bit. Thanks for your comments—much appreciated! [sd] 15:06, 6 January 2008 (UTC)reply
No problem. If you ever need any more reviewing, get in touch. :)
Rudget. 15:42, 6 January 2008 (UTC)reply
Will do. Thanks again, [sd] 20:00, 6 January 2008 (UTC)reply
Nordic cinema task force
A Nordic cinema task force has been proposed at
WP:FILMS, which would include the cinema of Iceland. Interested editors are encouraged to
sign up - if there is enough interest, then the task force will be created! Many thanks,

The project was rebooted and completely overhauled on April 17th, 2018. Its goals are to revitalize the entire portal system, make building and maintaining portals easier, support the ongoing improvement of portals and the editors dedicated to this, and design the portals of the future.
As of May 2nd, 2018,
membership is at 60 editors, and growing. You are welcome to join us.
The portal has been expanded with the addition of a new Good article section. The article selections listed below are presently in the GA section. If anyone is interested, please feel free to discuss these changes here. North America1000 03:29, 21 September 2019 (UTC)reply
N This new GA section clashes too much with the selected article and even sometimes selected biography sections. Removing entries from those to create another section is not appropirate. Selected article and selected biographies should rather have more entries from GA articles, rather than creating the GA section. Also, large changes to Portals are discussed first. Don't think that just becouse there is an small wikiproject behind it that you will get away with that.--
Snaevar (

Per your concern above, I have diffused content from the Good article section into the Selected article and Selected biography sections, and have removed the Good article section (
diff). Struck part of my original post above per all of this. North America1000 18:12, 26 May 2020 (UTC)reply
That is not the only thing I said,
North America. I also said adding those non GA articles to the list is not appropriate. You are also still adding information without discussing it, despite being reverted by an admin for that in October 2019. Your response is inadequate. This is not a matter of cherry picking the bits you like.--
Snævar (

GA and FA level articles shound not be the only criteria ...vital articles should also be presented to our readers as is the norm for most portals
Wikipedia:Portal#Selected content. That said what sections do you believe are not warranted....reverting years after the above talk and post below that was not replied to looks odd. Moxy- 11:46, 12 May 2022 (UTC)reply
@
Snævar: While I find myself in agreement with
Moxy here about including well-developed vital articles, I'm also fine with having only GA- and FA-class articles in the portal. I'll leave it for others to decide, and will default to whatever consensus occurs. North America1000 23:19, 15 May 2022 (UTC)reply
@
Snævar:Also, please consider adding yourself as a maintainer of the portal to the {{Portal maintenance status}} template on the main portal page, if you'd like. The portal would benefit from having a maintainer, and it's possible that I won't perform any more work on the portal into the future. North America1000 23:22, 15 May 2022 (UTC)reply
Upon further consideration, struck part of my comment above, per the analysis provided by another user
here (diff). North America1000 00:27, 16 May 2022 (UTC)reply
Article selection criteria
The following is article selected criteria that is listed at the portal's subpages. North America1000 18:00, 26 May 2020 (UTC)reply
I feel that that Selected biography criteria is too strict, and hinders this portal being improved. There are presently only three FA-class Iceland-related articles (
link), and none of them are biographies. Using this criteria, a Selected biography section can never exist. As such, I feel that
WP:IAR comes into play as a functional way to move forward, because the present criteria prohibits improvements. North America1000 18:14, 26 May 2020 (UTC)reply
The portal already displays some content about
Reykjavík, but please feel free to suggest specific ways in which it could be improved.

Recent changes
@
Northamerica1000 and
Snævar: It's clear from recent changes that there are differing opinions on the best content for this portal. Can we find a consensus on this talk page? Producing a good portal requires two sets of skills: subject knowledge and portal design. It's rare to find one editor with both, so collaboration can be helpful. A portal can be a distinctive space where topic experts do things their own way, perhaps after looking at similar portals and adopting or rejecting their design as they see fit. On the other hand, many tools and techniques are of general benefit and there is a case for applying them across all portals. Perhaps we should notify WikiProjects
Iceland and
Portals to see if any other editors can make helpful suggestions.
Certes (

(Came from the premature ArbCom). What @
Certes: said. This should have input from those two portals. Perhaps even an RfC to deal with any disputes instead of ArbCom? --Deepfriedokra(talk) 12:32, 12 May 2022 (UTC)reply
I commented above in the Article selection criteria section above almost two years ago that I felt the portal would benefit from also including additional, non-recognized articles, to provide a more comprehensive overview of Iceland and boldly moved forward in doing so. As of this post, nobody has since replied in the Article selection criteria section. Almost two years later the edits were reverted. I'm actually fine with the recent reversion that occurred, whereby only GA- and FA-class articles are now in the portal. While I would prefer the former, I am also perfectly fine with the latter. I'll leave it for others to decide, and will default to whatever consensus occurs. North America1000 23:09, 15 May 2022 (UTC)reply
