- 1990 - Tropical Storm Hortense attains peak intensity before being absorbed by Hurricane Gustav.
- 2005 - Hurricane Katrina (pictured) made landfall on the Gulf Coast near Buras-Triumph, Louisiana, flooding much of New Orleans and severely damaging the entire state of Mississippi. Katrina caused over $81 billion of damage, making it the costliest tropical cyclone on record.
