Moorea-Maiao is a commune of French Polynesia, an overseas territory of France in the Pacific Ocean. It consists of the island of Mo'orea (133 km2/51 sq. miles) and the much smaller atoll of Maiao (8.8 km2/3.4 sq. miles), [2] located 78 km (48 mi) southwest of Mo'orea, with both being part of the Windward Islands administrative subdivision. [3] As of the 2017 census, Moorea-Maiao had a population of 17,816, of whom 17,463 lived on Mo'orea and 353 lived on Maiao. [2]
The administrative centre of the commune is the settlement of Afareaitu on the island of Mo'orea. [4]
