Jimmy Carter - former
President of the United States . During his presidential campaign, Carter introduced the term "
born-again " into mainstream American politics. Carter publicly identifies himself with the
Cooperative Baptist Fellowship because of his differences with the conservative direction of the SBC leadership and beliefs. In 2000 he announced that he was severing all links with the Southern Baptist Convention because of what he viewed as gender discrimination.
