James Edward Lee Marsland (born 26 November 1989), known professionally as James Hype, [1] is an English DJ and record Producer.

Biography

James Hype was born James Edward Lee Marsland on 26 November 1989 in Wirral, Merseyside, England. He attended Calday Grange Grammar School and lived in Greasby. [2]

Hype discovered online music at the age of 13. This led to his parents buying him a set of DJ decks for his 15th birthday.

"When I was 15 or 16 years old, I was DJing from then on. I was playing friend’s birthday parties, doing sweet sixteens. I had no idea what music people were into. I was just playing the music that I liked. This is going to show you how old I am, but I used to play out fidget house. When I was 18, I started making mixed CDs and went around to local bars and gave it out to anyone who would take it off me. Eventually, someone called me up and paid me to come play at their local bar." [3]

At the age of 16, Hype landed his first residency, working as a warm up DJ at Destiny and Elite [4] nightclub at The Coliseum Retail Park near Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet, in Ellesmere Port. [5]

Hype began working as a DJ when he was 18 working in various clubs and bars in Merseyside and Northern England as Marsland. [6]

Hype rose to fame in 2017 with his single More than Friends. In 2018, he collaborated with Craig David on the single No Drama.

He is best known for “who does this?” and his 2022 single " Ferrari" which reached number one on the charts of the Netherlands, [7] Italy [8] and Belgium. [9]

Hype presented a late night radio show on Thursday nights on KISS FM from July 2017 to November 2019. [10] Hype is an ambassador for DJ equipment manufacturer Pioneer DJ and features in their online videos. [11]
