In Performance at the White House is a
PBS television series of performances from the
White House , the residence of the
president of the United States . The series began in 1978.
The first series was broadcast in 1978 during the presidency of
Jimmy Carter . The inaugural series consisted of five hour long programs of performances recorded in the
East Room .

Vladimir Horowitz , the opera singer
Leontyne Price , the cellist
Mstislav Rostropovich , and the guitarist
