"Gata Only" is a song by Chilean singers FloyyMenor and Cris MJ. The solo version by the former was released as a single on 21 December 2023 through UnitedMasters, with the duet version being released on 2 February 2024. A reggaeton song about going after a woman, it was originally written by Floyy between live performances in his home country Chile, with Christopher Álvarez (Cris MJ) co-writing another verse for the duet and Big Cvyu producing it.
A day after the collaboration was released, Álvarez announced that had plans to delete it, replacing it with the solo version, after it received negative comments by users. Plans were eventually pulled after being convinced by his fans. Days after, the song went viral in both singers' home country, later debuting atop the Chile Songs chart. It would also commence its virality on TikTok, where it appeared on international song charts and peaked at number 27 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
FloyyMenor, who is from Vicuña, Chile, rose to local prominence in his home country prior to releasing "Gata Only", with one of his hit singles being "Pa la Europa". [1] He told Billboard that he wrote "Gata Only" between live performances in a different region in Chile. [2] He would later release it in December 2023 through UnitedMasters, where it would then receive the attention of Álvarez, known for his hit single " Una Noche en Medellín", where he reached out to Floyy and told him that he acknowledged the song and wanted to be part of it, which was originally proposed that it would be the remix version. [3] [4] Not long after, the original version would be removed from streaming platforms and Floyy waited until 2 February 2024 to release its official duet version. [3]
A day after the new version of "Gata Only" and its music video was released, it received negative comments by users, who pointed out that Álvarez's part had too much reverb and thought it sounded like it was made with artificial intelligence. [5] That same day, Álvarez took to Instagram that the duet would be deleted and replaced with a version sung by Floyy only, adding that his fans are "in charge". After being convinced by his fans, the duet stayed on platforms, where it became trending in the singers' native country Chile days later. [6]
"Gata Only" is a reggaeton song. [7] In the title, the word "Gata" is in Spanish for "cat" but is used in the Latin urban genre to refer to women; its inclusion of "Only" in the title means that the woman both singers are singing about is unique. [8] Lyrically, it talks about going after a woman and makes references to the social media platform TikTok. [3]
In the United States, "Gata Only" debuted at number 98 on the Billboard Hot 100, [9] and would peak at number 27 in its fifth week. [10] On the Hot Latin Songs chart, it debuted at number 46 [11] and eventually peaked atop the chart in its seventh week, dethroning Xavi's " La Diabla" after it stayed at the position for 14 total weeks [12] [5] and also becoming the first Chilean song since 1999 to reach the chart's top 10, also first number-one song by a Chilean artist since “Peligroso Amor” by Myriam Hernández in 1990. [13] In its third week, "Gata Only" peaked at number four on the Latin Digital Song Sales chart, and peaked atop the Latin Streaming Songs chart on the issue dated 13 April 2024. [14] It also peaked at number 41 on the Canadian Hot 100. [15]
"Gata Only" debuted at number 149 on the Billboard Global 200 on the issue dated 24 February 2024, [16] as well as at number 174 on the Billboard Global Excl. US chart a week earlier. [17] In its ninth and tenth respective weeks, the song would reach the top 10 on both charts, at numbers 6 and 10, respectively. It marked both singers top 10 on both charts. [18] By its next respective weeks, it peaked at number four on both charts. [19] In both singers' native Chile, it debuted atop the country's song chart, [20] while in Bolivia, it peaked at number one in its eighth week on the chart. [21] It also reached the top 10 on other Latin American charts, including Argentina (3), [22] Colombia (10), [23] Costa Rica (3), [24] Ecuador (2), [25] Mexico (3), [26] and Peru (2). [27] "Gata Only" reached the top of the song charts in Switzerland [28] and France, [29] as well as the top 10 on song charts in other European countries, including Austria (9), [30] Greece (3), [31] Italy (9), [32] Luxembourg (3), [33] and Spain (3). [34] It would later receive certifications in Italy (Gold) [35] and Spain (Platinum). [36]
