The painting shows similarities with Cubism style. Crozier uses sunlit fronts of the buildings and contrasts them with deeply-shaded sides. This is considered as influence of strong sunlight found in Italy, where the he travelled several years on a scholarship. Painter André Lhote of Paris, taught Crozier breaking of subject in geometrical forms, as is seen in this painting. The painting was purchased by National Galleries of Scotland in 1942.
