Die Kirche ist dem Schutzpatron der Salzschiffer heiliger Rupert geweiht und ist die älteste noch bestehende Kirche der Stadt Wien. Das Langhaus und die unteren Geschoße des Turmes stammen weitgehendst aus dem 11/12. Jahrhundert. Sie befindet sich auf dem Gebiet des ehemaligen römischen Militärlagers Vindobona. Nach der Zerstörung der römischen Siedlung entstand die Keimzelle des späteren Wien im Bereich um die Ruprechtskirche. Sie war die Pfarre von Wien, bevor diese Funktion im Jahr 1147 an den Stephansdom überging. |
