Summary

Description
English: Tucked inconspicuously into the back end of a shopping plaza on Hertel Avenue in Buffalo, New York is the television studio building shared by sister stations WUTV and WNYO, channels 29 and 49 respectively, as seen on a June 2022 evening. Though they have only been under joint ownership since 2001, the history of these two stations bear many similarities. WUTV is the older of the two, launched in December 1970 under the ownership of local media mogul Stan Jasinski as Buffalo's first successful UHF television station. Though an independent station unaffiliated with any of the Big Three networks, WUTV established a wide audience not only because of its diverse programming (a mix of classic sitcoms and movies, first-run syndicated fare, and a robust selection of kids' cartoons) but also because of its prominent presence on Canadian cable television systems Rogers and Cogeco, with a viewership that at its peak stretched from London, Ontario to Gaspé, Quebec. In 1986, WUTV was one of the original stations to join the newly launched Fox network, an affiliation it retains today. For its part, WNYO's convoluted history begins in 1987, when it hit the air (using original call letters WNYB) as an independent station with a program schedule very similar to indie-era WUTV. Despite a healthy audience share that came about largely due to having secured local broadcast rights for the syndicated megahit Star Trek: The Next Generation, the station's early success was short-lived: it was sold in 1990 to Tri-State Christian Television, broadcasting religious content from Trinity Broadcasting Network. This arrangement was in place for six years, after which, in a complicated transaction, Grant Broadcasting, holder of the FCC license for the dormant Channel 26 in nearby Jamestown, purchased the station from TCT in exchange for a cash payment, the aforementioned Channel 26 license, and the construction of a new broadcasting facility at their expense. It was at this time when the newly-rechristened WNYO moved its studios into the building, which was built in 1962 and originally housed an Acme supermarket. By now affiliated with the fledgling WB network, WNYO was purchased by Sinclair Broadcasting in 2001, who also owned WUTV. The two stations began sharing the same studio in 2006; WUTV's former studio building on Whitehaven Road in Grand Island is still used by the station as their transmitter facility. Upon the WB network's demise in 2006, WNYO became an affiliate of MyNetworkTV.
