The USS INDEPENDENCE was on its way to be decommissioned, it was previously home ported in Yokosuka, Japan. The crew from the USS INDEPENDENCE cross decked onto the USS KITTY HAWK and brought it back to Atsugi, Japan. The USS INDEPENDENCE was destined for a ship yard in Washington.
