Description
English: Postcard view of "Theatrical District, Broad Street, Richmond, Virginia," 8th & Broad Streets, Richmond, Virginia. View shows street scene with at least two Cinemas and one other theater of some type visible. On street are three streetcars, two automobiles, and people, in the style of 1920s. A historic postcard showing electric-powered trolley streetcars in Richmond, Virginia, the city where Frank J. Sprague successfully demonstrated his new system on the hills in 1888. Of course the streetcars shown here are those of two generations later, of the type mass produced and seen in cities throughout North America. Looks like Perely Thomas cars. The cinema is showing To the Last Man (1923). (From the automobiles and women's fashion and other period details, this is almost certainly the silent version released in September 1923 rather than the 1930 or 1933 remake.)
Date Photo probably late 1923; see note above.
