Description
English: Trans World Airlines,Boeing 747-100 N93119 at London Heathrow Airport. This aircraft was manufactured in 1971. About 14 years and 2 months after this photo was taken, on 17 July 1996, a short circuit occurred as a result of damaged wiring (a common problem on older 747s [this 747 was 25 years old at the time of the collision]) allowing current to run into the centre wing fuel tank, producing a spark which caused the contents of the fuel tank to explode. The explosion caused the aircraft to disintegrate and crash into the Atlantic ocean, killing all 230 passengers and crew on board). The aircraft was operating TWA flight 800 from New York to Rome via Paris at the time, and this was the 3rd worst aviation disaster to take place on US soil.
