English: Original description:One of the supports of the main span of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. The cable-stayed bridge carries four lanes of vehicle traffic over the entrance to Tampa Bay in Florida. The bridge was completed in 1987. It replaced an earlier bridge, which had been partly destroyed when a ship ran into it in a storm in 1980. The main span is 1,200 ft (368 m) long, and has clearance of 193 ft (59 m) over the water.
This photo was taken from an excursion boat approaching the bridge from the Gulf of Mexico. St. Petersburg is in the background. The caissons around the bridge supports are to prevent an out-of-control ship from destroying the span.
