Notes

The grape design at the center of the dish and the cavetto is based on an early 15th century Ming model while the 'wave-and-rock' border is based on a Yuan model. The design was very popular and variants were produced from the 1530s into the 17th century, becoming increasingly distant from the Chinese models.

The British Museum database gives the date as c. 1530-1540 while the label next to the dish in Room 34 of the museum gives c. 1550-1570. The highly stylized version of the Yuan 'wave-and-rock' border on this dish includes separate (rather than overlapping) circles. This is a common feature on polychrome dishes produced in the second half of the 16th century. See p. 138 in Atasoy & Raby (1989).

Atasoy and Raby (1989) include pictures of other dishes with the grape design (Figs. 184-192). They date from c. 1530 (a charger in the Ashmolean) to c. 1600-1620.
