SiO_H2O.jpg(317 × 91 pixels, file size: 7 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)

This chemical image could be re-created using vector graphics as an SVG file. This has several advantages; see  Commons:Media for cleanup for more information. If an SVG form of this image is available, please upload it and afterwards replace this template with {{ vector version available|new image name}}.

It is recommended to name the SVG file “SiO H2O.svg”—then the template Vector version available (or Vva) does not need the new image name parameter.

Summary

Description
English: This diagram illustrates hydrolysis of a silicate mineral such as quartz. A water molecule breaks a bond between silicon and oxygen and is itself broken in the process, attaching a hydroxyl group to the silicon in place of the original oxygen and a hydrogen atom to the original oxygen in place of the silicon. This is an important reaction both in the melting process that produces magma and in weathering of silicate minerals at the Earth's surface.
