San Francisco
fireboat Guardian, a gift of survivors of the
w:en:Loma Prieta earthquake to supplement the city's fireboat Phoenix. The bridge towers in the background are part of the western span of the
San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
As any boat must be periodically disabled for maintenance, the presence of two ensures continuity of protection for San Francisco's extensive waterfront. The city of Oakland, across the bay, in 2003 inactivated its sole fireboat due to "trickle down" Federal>State>Local budget constraints, even after proving in the same year its value in quickly suppressing a terrible shoreline fire which could not be brought under control by conventional land based firefighters. San Francisco has been sometimes known as "The City that knows how". |
