The 576-foot long timber and iron structure was designed to allow the passage of boats along the Tamaki River via a swinging 40-foot section at the Pakuranga end. Its story offers the historian a choice of two or even three opening dates: the last cornerstone was ceremonially laid on 20 October 1865, although the approaches had not yet been finished; the bridge was first opened to traffic on 26 December 1865; and installation of the swinging portion was completed some time during 1866.

The view is taken from the Pakuranga side, and shows St Matthias Anglican Church, Panmure, outlined against the skyline to the left, and the two-storey Ferry Hotel (later renamed The Duke of Edinburgh) in the middle distance.
