Monserrate is a romantic neo-gothic palace with Moorish inspired details. It is located on a hill near Sintra, Portugal and was originally the site of a 16th century Chapel which was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake. The present palace was built in 1858 for Sir Francis Cook, Viscount of Monserate, and was used as a summer residence. The design of the gardens took advantage of the unique microclimates of the mountain to produce a magnificent park in which over 3,000 exotic species can still be seen today.
