Summary

Description
English: This image shows an engraving made from a sketch of Oyster Harbour made by Phillip Parker King in 1818.
Date 26 May 2005 (original upload date)
Source

The engraving was made for King's book Narrative of a Survey of the Intertropical and Western Coasts of Australia: Performed between the Years 1818 and 1822, which was published in 1825.

The original sketch is held by the Art Gallery of Western Australia, and the photograph of it, from which this digital image is derived, is held by the State Library of Western Australia. A digital image of the photograph was created by the State Library of Western Australia and is available from the Library Information Service of Western Australia (LISWA) website. The LISWA image includes an assertion of copyright 2001, but this assertion is incorrect: the image is in the public domain under both Australian and US copyright law. This digital image is a cropped version of the LISWA digital image that eliminates the incorrect copyright notice.

Public domain
This media file is in the public domain in the United States. This applies to U.S. works where the copyright has expired, often because its first publication occurred prior to January 1, 1929, and if not then due to lack of notice or renewal. See this page for further explanation.

United States
This image might not be in the public domain outside of the United States; this especially applies in the countries and areas that do not apply the rule of the shorter term for US works, such as Canada, Mainland China (not Hong Kong or Macao), Germany, Mexico, and Switzerland. The creator and year of publication are essential information and must be provided. See Wikipedia:Public domain and Wikipedia:Copyrights for more details.
This is a faithful photographic reproduction of a two-dimensional, public domain work of art. The work of art itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
Public domain

This work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 70 years or fewer.

You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States. Note that a few countries have copyright terms longer than 70 years: Mexico has 100 years, Jamaica has 95 years, Colombia has 80 years, and Guatemala and Samoa have 75 years. This image may not be in the public domain in these countries, which moreover do not implement the rule of the shorter term. Honduras has a general copyright term of 75 years, but it does implement the rule of the shorter term. Copyright may extend on works created by French who died for France in World War II ( more information), Russians who served in the Eastern Front of World War II (known as the Great Patriotic War in Russia) and posthumously rehabilitated victims of Soviet repressions ( more information).

The official position taken by the Wikimedia Foundation is that "faithful reproductions of two-dimensional public domain works of art are public domain".
This photographic reproduction is therefore also considered to be in the public domain in the United States. In other jurisdictions, re-use of this content may be restricted; see Reuse of PD-Art photographs for details.
