Summary

Description

The other day I posted the middle photo in this 3-photo sequence. I said I thought Car 1129 was about to be wyed at West Portal because of what Roger Puta said the roll sign read. Yesterday I found the other two slides in the sequence. This is PCC 1129, a M OCEAN VIEW WEST PORTAL short turn car at the West Portal (West Portal Ave and Ulloa St). in San Francisco, CA on taken by Roger Puta on August 24, 1967. Ulloa Street is perpendicular to West Portal Ave. a couple of hundred feet west from the actual portal. Ulloa is what the L TARAVAL cars use to get over to Taraval.

1. 1129 on West Portal Ave. approaching the West Portal Station.

2. 1129 in the West Portal Station. Roger caught her with her front pole up and rear pole down ready to back on to Ulloa St.

3. 1129 backing onto Ulloa still with her front pole up and rear pole down.

Next she will turn west on West Portal Ave. Questions:

Will she then back into West Portal station to pick up passengers (which makes sense) or will she just head out West Portal Ave.?
Did the short-turn cars make slightly different moves in the a.m. when most passengers were inbound than in the p.m. when most passengers were outbound?
When heading west, what did 1129's roll sign say?

I have stood and watched the action at West Portal during the afternoon rush when it was all Boeings (no short turns) and it was a pretty busy place. I can't envision a short-turn making wying movements every few minutes. Did the other lines radiating out from West Portal have west-end short turns? I can't remember seeing short turns on the less traveled end of a streetcar line in any city. So you MUNI historians please help me understand this.
