Archives du Musée McCord / James Duncan (1806-1881). L'artiste a représenté ici le vapeur "Montréal" arborant le pavillon britannique. Le "steamship" était un moyen de transport très populaire à l'époque. Le front de mer de l'ancienne ville est bien dessiné; on voit le long édifice du Marché Bonsecours, récemment construit, juste à ses côtés, la chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours. Au loin l'expansion urbaine touche maintenant le flanc du mont Royal où on y voit construite une des premières villas monumentales à la hauteur de avenue des Pins, il s'agit peut-être de celle de Simon McTavish qu'on surnommait "Marquis de la fourrure". John Molson, cet Irlandais entreprenant, construit en 1809 le premier navire à vapeur au pays. La flotte Molson assure le service régulier de passagers et du courrier entre Québec et Montréal et servira aussi, lors de l'invasion américaine de 1812, au transport des troupes. |
