Notes
Lake George, in upstate New York, was a familiar subject for artists of the Hudson River School. Heade, however, depicted it unconventionally. Rather than painting well-known views or the picturesque mountains, he delineated the foreground with extreme precision, producing a convincing illustration of geological change, a topic that had become popular at the time.
